Los Osos pitcher Austin Lorenz decides on college

Los Osos graduate Austin Lorenz spent Thursday morning going through orientation at Mt. SAC. The left-handed pitching standout had a few offers from four-year colleges but none were from programs he found to be a good fit.

Later that day everything changed. Lorenz is now headed to NCAA Division II Colorado-Mesa.

He had been talking to that school and had visited in May but it wasn’t until that day things were finalized.

Among the other schools he was considering were UC Davis, Westmont, University of Redlands and Naval Academy.

“I was going to go there (Mt. SAC) for a year and then re-apply at Naval Academy,” Lorenz said. “I texted the Mesa coach  one last time and asked if there was anything final and he told me to call him that night. That’s how it all worked out.”

Lorenz was the top pitcher for the Grizzlies (17-11). He went 7-2 with a 2.31 ERA in 11 appearances with 51 strikeouts in 58 innings. He was the starter and winning pitcher when the Grizzlies defeated CIF champion Etiwanda. It was the Eagle only loss in Baseline League play.

Lorenz was a first-team All-Baseline League selection and a second-team All-Inland Valley selection by the Daily Bulletin.

He plans to major in kinesiology and Mesa’s academic program in that field was one of the factors in the decision.

“It had that small-town feel to it and I really liked that,” Lorenz said. “The college is the center of everything there.”

Colorado-Mesa went 50-12 overall last season and won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at 32-4. The Mavericks lost in the Division II national semifinal to West Chester 1-0. The 50 wins in a season was a school record.

Los Osos pitcher Brandon Murillo to play at Willamette

Los Osos High School baseball standout Brandon Murillo has committed to NCAA Division III Willamette (Salem, Ore.).

He took a trip to the school Sept. 23 and liked what it had to offer in both athletics and academics. He plans to major in biology/pre-med.

“Of course everyone hopes to go to a Division I school growing up but I thought the Division III school was the best fit for me,” he said.

“It’s a great campus. I even got to sit in on a class and I think it will be a great place for me thrive on the field and academically,” he said.

Murillo has been on the Los Osos varsity since his sophomore year, being used primarily as a reliever. He is hoping to get a spot in the starting rotation this year.

“I really worked hard to get ready for this season and am hoping to showing what I can,” he said.

Willamette finished 20-18 last spring, including an 11-13 mark in the Northwest Conference.

Los Osos shortstop Charlie Verrone picks Butler

Los Osos High School baseball standout Charlie Verrone has made a verbal commitment to Division I Butler University (Indianapolis, Ind.).

He made an unofficial trip to the school in September and plans to make an official one in the coming months.

“I really loved the coaches and it was a great small school environment,” he said. “They told me I would be given just as much of a chance to play as the guys already there and as an athlete that’s what you want to hear.”

Verrone also took unofficial trips to James Madison (Va.) and Fordham and was talking to Cal State Northridge and UC San Diego.

Verrone, who hit .271 for the Grizzlies last season, plans to major in economics.

The Butler Bulldogs are coming off a 23-30 season that included an -10 showing in the Big East.

Los Osos downs Damien 4-1 in Battle of Baseline opener

Kyle Robenial of Los Osos talks about his outing

VIDEO: Zach Cooper of Los Osos talks about win

Los Osos got another stellar pitching performance from senior Kyle Robeniol and rode that to a 4-1 win over Damien Saturday morning in the first game of the Battle of the Baseline at LoanMart Field.

Robeniol, a University of Oregon commit, went the distance allowing just two hits and striking out seven.

He had a shutout until the seventh when Damien got its lone run.

“We feel good any time he’s out there. We know he’s going to give us a chance to win,” Los Osos coach Chris Romero said. “He did what we needed him to do today because we needed this game.”

The Grizzlies (10-13, 7-6) collected six hits. Zach Cooper had a pair of run-scoring singles, the first pushing home the first run of the game. His other one came in the seventh and rounded out the scoring.

Davis Moore had a two-run single in the seventh for his teams third and fourth runs.

Damien (8-14, 6-7) managed just two hits. It’s lone run came in the seventh when Andrew Garcia doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Grant Woodward.

The Spartans got off to a 3-11 start after three key injuries to the pitching staff. They had won five of their last seven coming in to put themselves in contention for a playoff berth.

“We still feel good about where we’re at,” first-year coach Andy Nieto said. “We control our destiny. Out guys didn’t get down when everything was working against us early. They kept battling.”

Battle of Baseline baseball games loom huge

Displaying 0507_SPO_IDB-L-BaselineBB-3.jpg

It is once again it is time for the big Battle of the Baseline League with all six teams playing on the same day in the same venue – LoanMart Field in Rancho Cucamonga.

It is always a memorable experience for the players involved but the fact that these games are so important in the league race will make for an even better day.

Here’s the schedule and a look at each game:

Damien (8-13, 6-6) vs. Los Osos (9-13, 6-6), 11 a.m.
These two teams are currently part of a three-way tie for third. Few probably expected Damien to be in this position after the Spartans got off to a 3-11 start on the season but the Spartans have won five of the last seven games to surge into contention.

Sophomore right-hander Isaiah Paige will be on the mound for Damien which has wins this season over Los Osos by scores of 3-1 and 1-0.

The Spartans have also gotten steady production from sophomore third baseman Harrison Spohn, senior catcher Andrew Garcia and junior outfielder Daniel Benedict.

Senior Kyle Robeniol (.440) has been the top hitter and pitcher for Los Osos and will be on the mound. Senior third baseman Niko Navarro (.323) is the other big contributor.

Etiwanda (16-5, 8-4) vs. Chino Hills (14-8, 7-5), 2 p.m.

The Eagles are in first place, one game ahead of the Huskies so this one will either give Etiwanda a two-game lead or allow Chino Hills to pull even with two games left.

Chino Hills will have ace Bailey Falter (4-1, 0.93) on the mound for the first time since April 15. He has been away from the team for disciplinary reasons.

Senior right fielder Chris Ceballos (.379, 14 RBI, 6 HR) and senior designated hitter Konnor Zickefoos (.500, 6 HR, 21 RB) have been the catalysts of the offense.

Etiwanda will have Aaron Sheridan (3-2, 4.14) on the mound. Sophomore Tyler Freeman (.400) and senior Kyle Isbel (.381, 24 RBI).

Chino Hills beat Etiwanda 6-4 in eight innings on Wednesday while Etiwanda won the first game between the teams 10-9.

Upland (14-9, 6-6) vs. Rancho Cucamonga  (13-11, 3-9), 5 p.m.
Upland is the third team in the three-way tie for third while Rancho is the only team not playing for anything but pride. The Cougars did pull the 6-4 upset on Wednesday while Upland won the first game between the two 1-0.

The biggest problem for the Cougars has been offense. Junior Tyler Lawson (4-5, 2.29) will be on the mound though and he doesn’t need much when he is on.

Upland will also have its top pitcher on the mound in senior Jeff Kross (4-4, 3.76). Connor Shepherd (.468, 17 RBI) and junior Skyler De Los Reyes (.358) are catalysts of the offense.
