Calvin Tang named boys basketball coach at Los Osos

Calvin Tang has been appointed head boys basketball coach at Los Osos. He replaces Dave Smith, the coach that built the program from its inception.

Tang, 34, spent the last four years at Hesperia, the last three heading the varsity program and the first assisting on the junior varsity level. His team was 61-24 in his three years including a still-in-tact 21-game Mojave River League win streak.

The Scorpions went 23-7 the past season, advancing to the CIF Southern Section Division 3A semifinal where they lost to Twentynine Palms 65-54.

Tang grew up in Riverside and played three years of basketball at Arlington. He went on to play at Sierra Community College in the more Northern part of the state.

He also spent four years as an assistant coach at Sierra after his playing eligibility expired.

From there he moved on to NCAA Division II Metropolitan State in Denver where he served as an assistant for two years, helping the team to postseason berths.

Shane Johnson has record day for Los Osos basketball

Veteran Los Osos boys basketball coach Dave Smith has been waiting for his sharp-shooter Shane Johnson to break loose. He was the team’s best long distance threat last year but through the first nine games this season he hadn’t managed more than two. And he only had two once.

He finally had that night. On Saturday he hit 11 3-pointers and finished with 39 points in the Grizzlies 100-72 win over Culver City at the Inland Empire Classic. The 11 in one game bested the school record, one he broke last year with 10.

The team hit 19 3pointers for the school record for makes by the team in a single game. Johnson, a 6-foot-3 senior guard, was 11-of-17 from long distance.

“We knew it was only a matter of time,” Smith said. “He has that ability and for whatever reason hadn’t really gotten in a rhythm this season. It was contagious because all our guys started hitting them.”

The Grizzlies are 7-3 on the season. They return to action on Dec. 26 against Ironwood of Tuscson, Ariz.
