Los Osos girls soccer wins third straight Claremont Tournament

LOS OSOS 3, CLAREMONT 1 >> Serena Camacho scored two goals for the Grizzlies (8-1-1) in Claremont Tournament Championship Game. Hannah McKinney also scored a goal for the Grizzlies.Los Osos Girls Soccer It is the third straight year the Grizzlies have won the tournament. Carson Jordan scored for the Wolfpack (8-2-1) off an assist from Sophie Jones while goalkeeper Sydney Fortson had six saves. Los Osos will play Dec. 28 in the Excalibur Tournament against Foothill. Claremont will play at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the San Gorgonio Tournament.

ROUNDUP: Luke Andres, Los Osos water polo advance to CIF second round

LOS OSOS 14, VILLA PARK 11 >> Luke Andres had four goals for the Grizzlies in the CIFSS Division 2 first round victory over the Spartans. Joseph Galgani contributed with three goals while goalkeeper Tanner Stewart had 11 saves in the win. Los Osos will play against Dana Hills on Saturday.

LOMA LINDA ACADEMY 3, MONTEBELLO 0 >> Demari Webb had 18 kills for the Roadrunners in the CIFSS first round victory over the Oilers, 25-9, 25-17, 25-18. Kayla Redfield contributed with 35 assists and three digs in the victory. Loma Linda Academy will play the winner of Connelly and Santa Ynez in the quarterfinals.
TEMPLETON 3, WEBB 0 >> The Gauls were defeated by the Eagles, 25-17, 25-13, 25-16, in the second round of the CIF-SS playoffs.

CIF Swimming and Diving: What to look out for this week

There is a lot to look forward to with the CIF Swimming and Diving Championships taking place this week (May 11-16) at Riverside City College.CIF Swimming and Diving

Fans are bound to have new faces to consider among local area talent following the loss of Kyle Coan and Kyle Gornay, both who were Los Angeles News Group’s male swimmers of the year, due to graduation last year.

On the girls side,  back-to-back Female Swimmer of the Year for the Los Angeles News Group, Sonia Wang, is no longer with Upland High School and is swimming for JSerra High.

Some new faces we may hear a lot could come from Los Osos, who will look to win its third consecutive CIF Team Championship, Rachel Forbes and Brian Whittington. Both of which had impressive showings at the Baseline League Finals Meet.

UPDATE: Baseline League swim titles decided, Whittington sets record

The Los Osos girls swimming and diving team finished first to earn the Baseline League Championship.

For the boys, both the Los Osos and Damien High athletic directors have tweeted that their respective teams had won a share of the league title.

Despite the tie, the Damien boys swimming and diving team has won at least a share a of the league championship each of the last 19 years in a row, according to athletic director Jeff Grant.

Grant also stated that Damien defeating Los Osos in the dual meet during the season and Los Osos’ victory at the league finals this past week played a role in the outcome and the eventual tie in the league standings.

Los Osos girls soccer repeat as Claremont Tournament Champions

Los Osos win Claremont Tourney

The Los Osos Grizzlies girls soccer team won back to back games on the final day of the Claremont Tournament to win the trophy for the second consecutive season.

The Grizzlies found themselves down 1-0 in the first half of the championship game against the South Hills Huskies, before responding with three unanswered goals in the second half to seal the victory.

Karley Whiteman, Kyrssa Johnson and Serena Camacho each scored a goal in the second half rally for the Grizzlies.

Whiteman believes that tournament victories like the one against the Huskies can bring the Grizzlies together as a stronger unit going forward in the season.

“I think it is really bringing us together and helping us learn to play as a team and figure out what works,” Whiteman explained. “Especially when we go down a goal like we did in the (Claremont Tournament) finals. It is helping us realize our potential and what we can do on the field.”

After giving up their only goal in the tournament to the Huskies, the Grizzlies made the most of the halftime period to come together and prepare for a second half rally against a team they had played just two days prior in tournament pool play.

“(The Huskies) figured out that we play a lot down the flanks of the field,” Camacho said. “We changed our plan of attack and took the ball down the middle of the field which lead to the (rally.)”

The Grizzlies’ mindset was also mentioned as a key factor to the second half rally.

“A lot of it was a change in mindset,” Camacho stated. “We had to think positive and really work together as a team.”

Prior to advancing to the tournament finals against the Huskies, the Grizzlies shutout the Brea Olinda Wildcats, 4-0, in the semifinals.

Kala McDaniels contributed to the Grizzlies victory by scoring one of the four goals. Johnson, Whiteman, and Camacho also scored one apiece.

The Grizzlies (7-0-3) will return to the field Dec. 26 in the Excalibur Tournament.

Los Osos defender makes college choice

Senior defender Kaitlin Imhof of the Los Osos High School soccer team has decided to attend and play soccer at Division III Aurora University in Illinois, just 40 miles West of Chicago.

Imhof helped the Grizzlies to an overall record of 16-3-6, that included a third-place finish in the tough Baseline League. Los Osos won a first round playoff game but lost a second rounder to Harvard-Westlake 1-0.

Aurora outscored its opponents 60-14 in 21 games. The AU women finished with an 18-3 overall record and captured their 15th Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference title in the 20 seasons of the program’s existence. The Spartans were ranked No. 16 in the latest D3soccer.com Top 25 poll.

Top water polo players named

All-CIF honors are out in boys water polo. Not surprisingly, Los Osos leads the way with four players honored.

Leading that quartet is senior Jared Strong who was named the Division 4 Player of the Year. He led the Grizzlies to a second straight CIF title.

Also making the list from Los Osos are senior Austin Stewart, senior Ben Andres and junior Thomas Halverson.

Also making the Division 4 team is Cole Carlson of Redlands East Valley.

In Division 5 Spencer Hosch of Webb was the lone local honored.

Los Osos girls ranked No. 1

The Los Osos High School girls water polo team has picked up where the boys left off.

The Grizzlies are ranked No. 1 in Division 3 to start the season. That lofty ranking comes on the heels of the boys team winning a CIF title in Division 4 after being ranked No. 1 all season.

The girls open the new season on Thursday against Simi Valley Royal.

There is a lot of local representation in Division 3. Joining Los Osos are Upland at No. 3, Ayala at No. 8 and St. Lucy’s at No.9.

In other divisions, Bonita is No. 4 in Division 4.

Chino is No. 3 in Division 7, with Don Lugo in the same poll at No. 9.
