Ontario boys soccer earns All-CIF Player, Coach of Year honors

Turns out the actual CIF championship was just the beginning for the Ontario boys soccer team. The hardware keeps rolling in for the lone local team to win a title as Loyola Marymount-bound forward Adrien Perez was named the All-CIF Player of the Year in Division 4 and Vince Mangione Coach of the Year.

Carter, which went undefeated this season until losing the CIF-SS Division 6 championship game, landed three players on the all-CIF team. Alta Loma, Ontario Christian and Ontario all had a pair of players on the all-CIF team.

Curiosity likely not enough to move Colony to Baseline League

Colony High School is admittedly curious about how successful it could be in the highly competitive Baseline League. Piquing that curiosity is the fact that Colony has been dominant in several sports during its reign in the Mt. Baldy League.

There will be a Foothill-Citrus Area releaguing meeting March 22 discussing the realignment that will take effect in the fall of 2014, but Colony athletic director Jaime Sandoval doesn’t envision his school going anywhere.

“Everybody’s curious,” Sandoval said. “But you look across the board at where you fit best. And for Colony, the best fit is (the Mt. Baldy League).”

Colony HS grad Wagner finishes second in NFL rookie of year voting

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner is finally getting his due. After receiving just one scholarship offer out of Colony High School, he finished his career at Utah State as the all-time leading tackler in the history of the WAC. The Seahawks endured plenty of criticism for selecting the undersized Wagner 15th in the second round of the 2012 draft, but that was a distant memory when he finished second in the Defensive Rookie of the Year voting Saturday night.

Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly, the No. 9 overall pick, won the award with 28 first-place votes to Wagner’s 11. That, however, wasn’t much consolation to Wagner, who tweeted…

Colony guard’s late-season push drawing eye of college scouts

There was a specific point this season at which Colony guard Everett Turner began to draw the eye of more college scouts, something he hopes will continue at a high-profile showcase on Saturday. Colony will take on Mission Viejo at noon in the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei High School, where the senior hopes to continue a tear that began following the Titans loss to Mt. Baldy League rival Montclair Jan. 4.

The 6-foot-2 combo guard is averaging 27.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and four steals since Jan. 4. The streak includes a 41-point game and 22 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in a rematch win over Montclair on Jan. 18.

Four things and one wild guess

1. If the preseason polls released on Tuesday are any indication, girls water polo season in the Inland Valley likely will still be going near the end of February.

Despite having moved up a division, Bonita claimed the No. 1 ranking in the CIF-SS Division 4 poll a season after it secured the No. 1 playoff seed in Division 5. The Bearcats have some unfinished business after falling one goal short of the division championship last season.

Four of the 10 teams in the Division 3 preseason poll are locals, headlined by a third-ranked Los Osos program that has reached the CIF finals four years in a row. The Grizzlies will have plenty of local competition, including Baseline League foe Upland, which is ranked No. 7. Upland and Los Osos were two of the final four teams left in the Division 4 playoffs last season but lost to eventual champ Harvard Westlake.

Marquee matchup: Colony at Chino

For the third season in a row, Colony and Chino enter their meeting with perfect Mt. Baldy League records. Since Chino entered the league in 2010, the matchup between the Cowboys (6-2, 4-0) and Colony (6-3, 5-0) has determined the league champion each season. This year appears to be no different.

League of their own: Colony is the defending league champion after grinding out a 24-16 win over Chino last season on the way to a semifinal appearance in the CIF-SS Central Division playoffs. In 2010, it was Chino that emphatically won league with a 49-20 pasting of Colony. The two seem more evenly matched this season than the previous two years, creating plenty of intrigue for tonight’s matchup.

“When the same two teams square off every year for the league championship,” Colony coach Steve Randall said, “the rivalry develops itself.”
