Claremont, Ontario Christian remain in state volleyball hunt

The volleyball teams from Claremont and Ontario Christian to to the court again on Tuesday looking to get one step closer to a state title.

The Southern California Regional semifinals are scheduled. Claremont (22-8), the No. 11 seed, will travel to No. 2 Lakewood-St. Joseph’s (27-14) in Division II play.

Claremont has had quite the season under first-year coach Daniel Reighter, The Wolfpack claimed a share of the Palomares League title by beating Glendora in the regular season finale. It is the first league title in the sport in 18 years.

Claremont lost in Southern Section play in the semifinal to Sierra Canyon but has been impressive in its state tournament play. The Wolfpack advanced with a 3-0 win over Westridge Saturday.

St. Joseph was the second-place team out of the Del Rey League behind La Salle. It defeated Glendora 3-1 to win the Southern Section Division 3 championship.

Elsewhwere, No. 6 Ontario Christian (22-6) will be at No. 2 Point Loma (22-12) in Division IV action.

The Knights, led by sophomore Annaka Jorgenson, bested rival Riverside Notre Dame on Saturday in the So Cal quarterfinal. It was the fourth time those teams had played and Notre Dame had won the first three.

Point Loma was the second-place team out of the City Western League. It lost in the quarterfinals of the San Diego draw in Division 1.

Regional finals are slated for Saturday with the highest seeded team hosting. Those winners advance to state title games on Sat., Dec. 6 against the Northern California winner at Santiago Canyon College.
