Rancho Cucamonga QB to be priority walk-on at Arizona next season

Two years ago, Adam Friederichsen was the fourth-string quarterback at Carlsbad La Costa Canyon. Next season, he will be on the University of Arizona roster.

In his only season at Rancho Cucamonga, the senior started and helped the Cougars to the CIF-SS Inland Division semifinals, helping him earn a priority walk-on offer from Arizona, which means he won’t receive a scholarship but will be guaranteed a spot on the roster.

A family illness prompted Friederichsen’s family to move closer to the City of Hope cancer treatment center in Duarte, landing him at a school that had just graduated its two-year starting quarterback.

Oregon swoops in on top track recruit just in time for Signing Day

Jordie Munford is glad Oregon annoyed her with its persistence. If not for the incessant phone calls, the Rancho Cucamonga High School hurdler would have made a decision between USC and UCLA yesterday morning when she signed a letter of intent.

Two weeks ago Oregon wasn’t even on the radar of one of the country’s top track recruits. Two weeks later she signed a letter of intent with the Ducks on Wednesday.

“They just kept calling and kept calling,” Munford said. “Finally they convinced me to take a trip up there. After my visit, they were pretty much in front from there.”

Mexican National team member from Upland HS will play soccer at USC

Tanya Samarzich has played plenty of soccer at venues around the globe as a member of the Mexican national team. The Upland High School senior made it official on Wednesday that her newest destination will be USC, with which she signed on National Signing Day.

The forward with scholarship offers from around the country had a short list that included North Carolina, Michigan, Texas and most of the Pac-12. Despite all the options, USC was an easy choice.

“USC is my dream school,” Samarzich said. “They’re been recruiting me since I was a freshman and my whole family are USC fans. So, it really was an easy choice.”

Small private school’s signing class includes five total, three to Pac-12

Webb went beyond simply bucking the trend that one percent of high school students earn athletic scholarships. The private school in Claremont with an enrollment of less than 400 had five athletes sign, but three of them with Pac-12 schools.

Shortstop Aaron DiGimarino, who hit .493 with 41 RBIs last season, signed with USC. Webb is sending another athlete to USC, which also signed soccer player Ashlynn Ramos. Another girls soccer player from Webb, Carly Olszewski, signed with a Stanford team currently ranked No. 3 in the country.

RCHS signing class includes 13 members, five D-I football players

The Rancho Cucamonga High School signing class is as deep as it is talented. The Cougars sent five football players to Division I schools, all of which played on the same side of the ball. Needless to say, the Rancho Cucamonga defense played no small role in advancing the football team to the CIF-SS Inland Division semifinals for the third season in a row. Football was far from the only sport at Rancho Cucamonga with signees to reputable schools on National Signing Day.

Colony guard’s late-season push drawing eye of college scouts

There was a specific point this season at which Colony guard Everett Turner began to draw the eye of more college scouts, something he hopes will continue at a high-profile showcase on Saturday. Colony will take on Mission Viejo at noon in the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei High School, where the senior hopes to continue a tear that began following the Titans loss to Mt. Baldy League rival Montclair Jan. 4.

The 6-foot-2 combo guard is averaging 27.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and four steals since Jan. 4. The streak includes a 41-point game and 22 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in a rematch win over Montclair on Jan. 18.
