Los Osos graduate Stephen Johnson signs with Kentucky

Stephen Johnson had a breakout season at College of the Desert. Now he is taking his talent to the SEC – University of Kentucky to be exact.

Johnson, a 2013 graduate of Los Osos, signed with the school last week and will leave on Monday having enrolled early.

Johnson, a 6-foot-3, 190-pounder, completed 257 of 441 passes (58.3%) for 3,210 yards with 34 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.

He originally signed with Grambling out of high school and red-shirted his first year.

He started the first four games of the 2014 season, then sustained a sprained ankle that resulted in him missing several weeks. He never really got a chance to get the job back when he returned.

Johnson had the feeling he wasn’t going to get the job back as sophomore either so he got back in touch with Desert coach Jack Steptoe, with whom he was familiar from his participation in some camps which he attended while in high school.

His outstanding season for the Roadrunners helped land him multiple offers. Besides Kentucky he had offers from Hawaii, Arkansas State, Florida A&M, Eastern Michigan, Morgan State, Nevada-Reno and Lamar.

“They are very passionate about their sports there,” Johnson said of Kentucky. “I really liked the coaches and the team. There will be competition for the position but I’m not afraid of that.”

Johnson is hoping enrolling early will give him a leg up on the competition. He plans to major in economics or business.

“You really have to do that if you’re going to come in and play at this level,” he added.
