Dennis Latimore named boys basketball coach at Chino Hills

Dennis Latimore will be the third coach in as many years as he takes the helm of the Chino Hills High School boys basketball program next season.

He will replace Stephan Gilling whose team went 30-3 in his only season.

Gilling was a walk-on coach and did not work full-time at the school. The school district policy is to open a job to candidates on campus first and only seek the off-campus coach if a suitable candidate is not found.

Latimore, whose appointment was approved at tonight’s board meeting, is an English teacher at the school, starting in that role in January.

He played college basketball at both Arizona and Notre Dame, spending his first two seasons (2001-2003) at Arizona, then spending the last two (2003-2005) playing for the Fighting Irish, earning his B.A. in English from Notre Dame.

He also earned a Master’s in Urban education from Loyola Marymount.

Latimore served as head coach for View Park High School for two years, leading the team to the 2014 CIF Division 5 Los Angeles City Section championship as well as the Division V Southern California Regional final of the state playoffs. His team was 23-6 in that run.

Chino Hills does graduate LiAngelo Ball but still could be a formidable foe the coming season. The youngest Ball brother, LaMelo, will be a junior, as will be big man Onyeka Okongwu, although rumors have persisted that both could be going elsewhere next season.

Mt. Baldy baseball teams ready for triple-header at LoanMart field

The six Mt. Baldy League baseball teams will convene at LoanMart Field, home of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, on Saturday.

It is the second year the team will play at the venue which serves as home to the Dodgers California League affiliate.

The best game of the day should be the 2 p.m. contest between defending league champion Don Lugo (13-1-1, 1-0-1) and Montclair (10-3, 3-0). Don Lugo is ranked first in CIF Southern Section Division 3 while Montclair is ranked 10th in Division 4.

Chaffey (6-3-1, 1-1-1) takes on Colony (2-8, 0-3) at 11 a.m. and Alta Loma (6-5, 1-1) faces Ontario (3-4, 1-2) at 5 p.m.

Rancho Cucamonga baseball standout Chris Flores picks Northridge

Rancho Cucamonga junior baseball standout Chris Flores has committed to Cal State Northridge.

The junior pitcher-infielder is hitting a team-best .552 (16 for 29) and leads the team in both RBIs (11) and runs scored (10).

Northridge has been actively pursuing him more than any other school. Flores likes the direction the program is headed.

“I really like what the coaching staff is doing there,” he said. “It hasn’t been the best program in the Big West but they are improving and I really want to be part of that.”

Flores plans to major in sports management.

He also took an unofficial trip to Arizona State but didn’t see the need to entertain any other offers.

“I am really happy with this,” he said. “It will be great to be part of a program on the way up.”

Rancho Cucamonga’s Hunter Schoeller headed to UC Irvine

Rancho Cucamonga water polo standout Hunter Schoeller has decided to attend UC Irvine.

Schoeller, a four-time first-team All-Baseline League selection, was also considering Pepperdine and UC San Diego. He has visited UC Irvine twice, as well as as UC San Diego.

“I just liked the atmosphere a little bit better and I have a lot of friends going there too so I thought it was the best fit,” he said.

Schoeller has been a bit part of the improvement of the Cougars program. He scored a single-season record of 160 goals the past season which also helped land him All-Inland Valley honors by the Daily Bulletin.

He also had 58 assists, 63 steals and 96 ejections drawn.

Schoeller is undecided on a major.

Here is a link to a story we ran earlier this year on Hunter and his brother Austin.

Chaffey, Don Lugo baseball teams settle for scoreless tie

he baseball teams from Don Lugo and Chaffey battled each other and the weather elements last week.

But they’ll settle for a scoreless tie because their game was halted in the seventh inning because of rain.

Don Lugo coach Jeff Abel said both he and Chaffey counterpart Max Pinedo thought the game would be finished at a later date, perhaps before the next regularly scheduled game between the two.

After checking with the CIF the next day they were told since the teams played four innings it was a regulation game and would go down as a tie,

Abel said when the game was called it wasn’t raining that hard. The problem was that fresh balls were not being put into play often enough and the ones being used just became difficult to handle for both pitchers.

The tie makes defending Mt. Baldy League champion Don Lugo 9-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in league play and Chaffey 5-3-1 overall and 0-1-1 in league play.

Don Lugo takes a break from league play this week and is hosting a spring break tournament while Chaffey gets back into league play Tuesday against Ontario.
