Upland boys basketball team savoring big win over Etiwanda

The Upland High School boys basketball team picked up a big win on Tuesday night when it upended Etiwanda 50-49.

The Highlanders looked much-improved early in the season, with that run highlighted by a victory at the San Gabriel Classic. But it had been a tough go in Baseline League play as Upland was 0-8 going into the game with Etiwanda. There were some close calls, three-point losses to both Los Osos and Rancho Cucamonga.

Upland coach Anthony Mason admitted his team was in need of a moral boost. Ironically, he says that probably came in a loss – the 91-60 loss to Chino Hills on Friday.

The Highlanders spotted the Huskies an 18-0 lead with players reluctant to shoot. After a timeout Mason had his team regroup and they were more competitive after that.

The first time the teams played Upland lost to Chino HIlls 106-54 in a game that wasn’t even that close.

“The big thing in that game (against Chino Hills) was that they competed and they didn’t back down,” he said. “It was much different than the first time we played them. It was a whole different feel and I think they took that into the Etiwanda game. They realized they didn’t have to be intimidated by anybody.”

The difference in the Etiwanda game was a 3-point play by Bryce Parker with 18 seconds left Nick Bates scored a team-high 22 points while Michael Flynn and Osys Stokes chipped in with 13 and 11 respectively.

The Highlanders close out league play on Thursday at Los Osos. The game could loom large for playoff seeding purposes as both are in Division 2-AA with Los Osos currently ranked 13th and Upland 14th.

It has been several years since the Upland boys basketball team has been competitive with the top teams in the Inland Valley. Well the Highlanders are a team finally headed in the right direction.

The Highlanders are 12-3, with eight straight wins under second-year head coach Anthony Mason.

They are coming off a 73-49 win over Sunny Hills in the championship game of the San Gabriel Valley Classic on Thursday at Monrovia High School. That was a win over a Sunny Hills team that went 4-1 at the recent Inland Empire Classic with one of those wins over much-improved Los Osos.

Mason is encouraged.

“We’re probably a little ahead of where I thought we would be,” Mason said. “Last year was a definite learning curve for me, getting to know the kids and them getting to know me and figuring out a good space to be in when it came to dealing with them.”

This is Mason’s first head job, although he was Upland’s interim coach the year veteran coach John McNally was sidelined from a stroke. Before getting the job at Upland full-time he had served as assistant coach for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s basketball team.

Upland was 11-16 under the previous coach in 2014-2015, then went 10-18 last year in Mason’s first year so they have already easily surpassed that win total at the midway point.

Mason said a change in the style of play from last year has been beneficial. Last year the Highlanders were a more deliberate, half-court type team. Mow they’re pushing the pace and going more up-tempo.

It was a matter of happy median between what style was best given the personnel and what the players wanted to do.

“It was a matter of figuring out what system they were willing to buy into,” Mason said. “They wanted to get up and down the floor and I thought we had the athletes to do that so that has helped.”

Senior Osys Stokes has led the way, averaging 23 points a game and earning most valuable player honors in the just concluded tournament. Senior Nick Bates (14.5 ppg) is the second leading scorer with junior Bryce Parker averaging a double-double, 10-10.

Anthony Mason named boys basketball coach at Upland

Anthony Mason has been named head boys basketball coach at Upland High School.

Mason, 30, is no stranger to the area. He spent the last two seasons as an assistant for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s team which won the SCIAC and advanced to the playoffs.

But he is also very familiar with the Upland community, having spent eight years as a lower lever coach at the school when John McNally, now the athletic director, was the head coach.

He also took the helm of the Upland program in 2011 when McNally was sidelined after suffering a stroke,

Mason received his bachelor of arts in sociology from Long Beach State.  He also got a master’s in education in school and clinical  counseling from Azuza Pacific.

Mason will also work as a counselor at Upland.

Mason replaces Josh Thomas whose team went 11-16 overall and 3-7 in the Baseline League in his only season.

He knows he has his work cut out for him in getting the Highlanders back to where they can compete in the tough league.

“You have to go to practice every day prepared to outwork everyone else,” he said.

Mason says he learned a lot from coaching with Kristen Dowling at CMS.

“It’s about building a culture where you demand excellence from yourself and from your players,” he said. “And you develop a strong work ethic.”
