Upland RB Payton ruled ineligible for 2013 due to athletically motivated transfer

San Dimas running back Jake Payton will be forced to sit out his senior season after a ruling today that his transfer to Upland was athletically motivated. The CIF-SS denied Payton’s transfer due to a violation of rule 510, according to its website.

forsaleThis is the second high profile football transfer in the Inland Valley to receive this ruling in the offseason. Payton can only hope to have more success in the appeals process than Diamond Bar transfer Antonio Hull. Originally, San Dimas planned not to challenge Payton’s transfer to Upland, but changed its tune this week.

“We had a change of heart, it’s a group decision,” Zernickow told the San Gabriel Valley Tribune on Monday. “My opinion is that you can’t say nothing if something happened.”

San Dimas challenging transfer of star RB Payton to Upland

The San Gabriel Valley Tribune’s Aram Tolegian is reporting that San Dimas will challenge the transfer of star running back Jake Payton to Upland on the grounds of athletic motivation. San Dimas originally said it wouldn’t challenge the transfer of the running back who had 1,658 yards and 22 touchdowns last season.

“We had a change of heart, it’s a group decision,” San Dimas football coach Bill Zernickow told the Tribune. “My opinion is that you can’t say nothing if something happened.”

Inland Valley goes 0 for 3 in CIF-SS baseball semifinals

forsale

Diamond Bar wasn’t alone. The Brahmas suffered the fate of the other two local baseball teams in Tuesday’s CIF-SS semifinals, falling a game short of playing for a championship. After Diamond Bar couldn’t convert a third-inning leadoff triple into a run, it was all downhill in a 10-2 loss to second-seeded Gardena Serra.

Though San Dimas avoided an Oaks Christian ace expected to be a first-round draft pick, the Saints fell to the No. 1 seed, 3-0. Division 2 No. 3 seed Los Osos went down in heartbreaking fashion, falling victim to a two-out single in the final inning of a 3-2 loss to second-seeded Temecula Valley. Ontario Christian, the final local baseball team standing, will play its Division 5 semifinal today after the game was delayed due to Oak Hills’ graduation.

Garey, Pomona hoping to form new league with Montview members

Garey certainly makes a convincing argument for why it should be granted relief from the Mt. Baldy League.

Take its track record in girls’ sports. Only twice in the last three years has Garey not finished last in the league in any sport.

The process of releaguing begins Friday, when Garey will inform all principals and athletic directors in the Mt. SAC area of its request for relief after seven years in the Mt. Baldy League.

“The sad fact is that not only are we coming in last place for the majority of our programs, but we are also getting completely dominated by our league opponents for the majority of our teams at all levels,” Garey athletic director John McGaha said. “Garey hasn’t been in a league where we could be competitive in most sports for more than ten years, but we are hoping this will finally change.”

San Dimas girls land three on Division 6 All-CIF soccer team

San Dimas is the only local girls soccer team with more than one player on the all-CIF teams released Monday, which assuredly makes the Saints the only team with three. Goalkeeper Britain Chaputa and junior midfielders Daisy Duran and Morgan Quaternick were all named to the Division 6 all-CIF team on the heels of carrying San Dimas within eight minutes of a CIF-SS championship. The Saints’ season ended with a stunning 3-2 loss to Citrus Valley Feb. 27 in the CIF championship game, but all-CIF honors are a welcome reprieve.

DIVISION 1
Player of the Year: Abbi Williams, Sr. Defense – Chaminade
Coach of the Year: Mike Evans – Chaminade

Four things and one wild guess

1. This is a weekly feature I’ll be posting on the blog every Wednesday evening with a few nuggets of information that won’t necessarily be limited to prep sports. After the four items, I’ll always include one bold prediction that will make me look good on the rare occasion that I’m right. But until that happens…

2. Plans for football stadium construction projects to be completed by next summer at Pomona Unified District schools Diamond Ranch, Garey and Pomona were recently enhanced. The original budget of $10 million included funding for bleachers, field lighting, scoreboards, goal posts and turf fields at Diamond Ranch and Garey. Pomona, which is in the third season of playing games on its home field while Diamond Ranch and Garey still share Ganesha’s field, was to receive just bleachers.

With the recent approval of $5 million to that budget, now all three schools will also receive synthetic tracks, turf fields, restrooms, concession stands and ticket booths. Construction is already underway on the stadiums, which will be usable by next season, according to school board president Jason Rothman. Work on the restrooms, concession stands and ticket booths will begin following the conclusion of this football season.

3. St. Lucy’s volleyball team’s sweep of Chino Hills on Tuesday will be replayed on Time Warner Cable’s SoCal 101 on Friday at 9:30 p.m. Randy Rosenbloom will call the play-by-play and Paul Westphal is the color commentator. There will be additional replays of the game on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Monday at 7 p.m. The victory moved two-time defending CIF champion St. Lucy’s to 11-5 on the season and 4-0 in the Sierra League. Chino Hills (14-7, 2-2), which played St. Lucy’s in the CIF final two years ago, is tied for third place in league.

4. Rancho Cucamonga’s boys cross country team moved into the state rankings this week at No. 10 in Division 1 thanks in part to a second-place finish at the Inland Empire Challenge on Saturday. The Ayala boys dropped from fourth to ninth in the Division 2 rankings while the Bonita girls held steady at No. 3 in Division 3.

My wild guess this week is that the Rancho Cucamonga football team won’t lose another game this season. The Cougars have lost twice by a combined total of 13 points, including last week’s 19-7 defeat at the hands of Upland. But they’ll only get healthier as they make a run to the CIF-SS Inland Division championship.
