Los Osos girls soccer repeat as Claremont Tournament Champions

Los Osos win Claremont Tourney

The Los Osos Grizzlies girls soccer team won back to back games on the final day of the Claremont Tournament to win the trophy for the second consecutive season.

The Grizzlies found themselves down 1-0 in the first half of the championship game against the South Hills Huskies, before responding with three unanswered goals in the second half to seal the victory.

Karley Whiteman, Kyrssa Johnson and Serena Camacho each scored a goal in the second half rally for the Grizzlies.

Whiteman believes that tournament victories like the one against the Huskies can bring the Grizzlies together as a stronger unit going forward in the season.

“I think it is really bringing us together and helping us learn to play as a team and figure out what works,” Whiteman explained. “Especially when we go down a goal like we did in the (Claremont Tournament) finals. It is helping us realize our potential and what we can do on the field.”

After giving up their only goal in the tournament to the Huskies, the Grizzlies made the most of the halftime period to come together and prepare for a second half rally against a team they had played just two days prior in tournament pool play.

“(The Huskies) figured out that we play a lot down the flanks of the field,” Camacho said. “We changed our plan of attack and took the ball down the middle of the field which lead to the (rally.)”

The Grizzlies’ mindset was also mentioned as a key factor to the second half rally.

“A lot of it was a change in mindset,” Camacho stated. “We had to think positive and really work together as a team.”

Prior to advancing to the tournament finals against the Huskies, the Grizzlies shutout the Brea Olinda Wildcats, 4-0, in the semifinals.

Kala McDaniels contributed to the Grizzlies victory by scoring one of the four goals. Johnson, Whiteman, and Camacho also scored one apiece.

The Grizzlies (7-0-3) will return to the field Dec. 26 in the Excalibur Tournament.

Loaded Los Osos girls volleyball team receives a pair of talented transfers

Alyssa Ybanez, left, transferred from Rim of the World to Los Osos.

Alyssa Ybanez, left, transferred from Rim of the World to Los Osos.

It’s hard to imagine the Los Osos volleyball team getting much better, but that’s exactly what happened this offseason. The team that finished one win shy of the first CIF championship in school history gained two transfers, one of which helped lead her team to a CIF title last season.

Alyssa Ybanez, the 2012 Mountain Valley League offensive MVP, transferred to Los Osos along with 6-foot-1 Aquinas middle blocker Delaney Goodrich. They will join a core of players at Los Osos including the reigning Daily Bulletin Player of the Year, Cal-bound senior Ashten Smith-Gooden and Ashley Kaylor, a first team All-Valley selection last season.

2013 All-Valley Boys track team: Etiwanda’s Parish reaches new heights

forsaleTRACK ATHLETE OF THE YEAR: Miles Parish, Etiwanda
It’s a good thing Miles Parish is 6-foot-5.

He needed every inch of his towering frame to win the CIF State championship in the 400 meters.

“My coach told me before the race that it was going to be so close I would have to lean at the finish,” Parish said. “I didn’t know for sure I won until the announcer said it.”

At that very moment, it all become worth it. All the excruciating ladders, the weight lifting, the monotonous training.

MLB draft: Los Osos’ Chris Kohler got inside info on his new organization

There were no Inland Valley baseball players drafted on Day 1 of the MLB first-year player draft.

But Day 2 saw three: Los Osos LHP Chris Kohler (third round supplemental, No. 106), Oakland A’s; Upland HS/Pepperdine RHP Scott Frazier (6th round, 168), Chicago Cubs; Diamond Bar HS/Riverside City College Kenny Mathews (7th round, 201), Cleveland Indians.

For Kohler, he was drafted by an organization he said he knew was very interested. He also had someone to talk to about that organization.

“I talked Daniel Robertson (from Upland High), who was drafted by the A’s in the supplemental first round last year. He told me all about the organization and how they do things. I’ve been playing with him with the ABD Bulldogs for a long time.”

Inland Valley goes 0 for 3 in CIF-SS baseball semifinals

forsale

Diamond Bar wasn’t alone. The Brahmas suffered the fate of the other two local baseball teams in Tuesday’s CIF-SS semifinals, falling a game short of playing for a championship. After Diamond Bar couldn’t convert a third-inning leadoff triple into a run, it was all downhill in a 10-2 loss to second-seeded Gardena Serra.

Though San Dimas avoided an Oaks Christian ace expected to be a first-round draft pick, the Saints fell to the No. 1 seed, 3-0. Division 2 No. 3 seed Los Osos went down in heartbreaking fashion, falling victim to a two-out single in the final inning of a 3-2 loss to second-seeded Temecula Valley. Ontario Christian, the final local baseball team standing, will play its Division 5 semifinal today after the game was delayed due to Oak Hills’ graduation.

Bonita, Los Osos clinch league titles, avoid high-stakes rematches

The Bonita and Los Osos baseball teams can sleep soundly after league championship-clinching wins on Wednesday. Had either of them lost, they would be facing the prospect of losing a wire-to-wire lead in their respective leagues on the final day of the regular season.

Los Osos’ Chris Kohler may be the exception who can’t doze off immediately tonight. The senior is likely still winding down from throwing his first career no-hitter, not to mention breaking the school’s single-season strikeout record. The Grizzlies’ 9-0 win over second-place Glendora gives Los Osos its first Baseline League championship in six years and makes Friday’s matchup between the two teams meaningless. Second baseman Chris Riley has to be mentioned as much for his 3-for-3, two-RBI, two-run performance at the plate as his no-hitter-saving play in the field with one out in the final inning.

CIF-SS track preliminaries full of local contenders after league finals

On Thursday, it was Ayala freshman Sydney Tullai dropping jaws at the Sierra League finals track meet by winning the 800 meters, 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters. (Check out the photo gallery) It’s a combination of events so taxing – “insane,” was the term of preference for Chino Hills coach Richard Morales – that Tullai won’t be able to run all three at CIF-SS Preliminaries on May 11. She’s leaning toward the 3,200, but her decision will be jut one of many interesting story lines heading into the posteason.

On Friday at Baseline League finals (photo gallery) Upland’s Myles Valentine tied the top wind-aided 100 meter time in the state this season with a 10.36-second effort. The runner he tied was defending state champion Khalfani Muhammad, who defeated Valentine two weeks earlier at the Mt. SAC Relays, prompting this statement: “I knew at that point,” Valentine said, “I wasn’t going to finish second again.” He hasn’t.

2013 All-Valley water polo team: Los Osos’ dominance keeps growing

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Kristen Jensen, Los Osos, Senior
After five consecutive trips to the CIF finals, it’s safe to say Los Osos has a good girls water polo program. Though the school has only been around for eight seasons, in that short period there have obviously been some accomplished girls water polo players to come through the program. Besides leading the team to its second ever CIF championship, Kristen Jensen’s senior season is best defined by breaking the school’s single-season scoring record by a mind-blowing 58 goals. Jensen (pictured above) scored 174 goals this season and helped the Grizzlies end a three-year losing streak in the CIF finals. “We’ve never had a player this dominant come through our program,” Los Osos coach Dave Merryman said.

COACHES OF THE YEAR: Eric Cypher and Dave Merryman, Los Osos
The co-head coaches have led Los Osos to five consecutive appearances in the CIF finals. After losing the last three, they helped the Grizzlies capture CIF-SS Division 3 championship, the program’s first title since 2009. Los Osos finished the regular season by claiming its eighth straight Baseline League title.
