Rancho Cucamonga coach selected for staff of national all-star football game

His team bowed out of the CIF playoffs on Friday, but the season isn’t over for Rancho Cucamonga High School football coach Nick Baiz.

Baiz was asked last week to be an assistant coach of the West team in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, one of two prestigious national high school all-star games. The Cougars’ seventh-year coach readily accepted the request to coach in the game that includes two members of his secondary, seniors Chris Hawkins and Tahaan Goodman.

Baiz will arrive in San Antonio on Dec. 29 to coach the team during the week of practice leading up to the Jan. 5 game at the Alamodome to be televised on NBC. Baiz will be contacted this week by West head coach Mike Jinks of Cibolo (Texas) Steele High School to further define his role on the coaching staff.

“A month ago, they let me know they would be flying me out to watch the game, but then last week they called and asked if I wanted to coach in it,” Baiz said. “I’ll get to be there with Chris and Tahaan, so it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
