August 2008 Archives

In a message left by an anonymous caller this morning, it came to my attention classified employees were also at the Chaffey Joint Union High School District Back to School Kick-Off.

The call was in response to a City News article I wrote that came out today in the Ontario/Montclair  and Rancho Cucamonga/Fontana/Rialto sections.

Teachers and school administrators were also joined by classified employees at Chaffey Joint Union High School District's Back to School Kick-Off Aug. 21 at the Gardiner Spring Auditorium at Chaffey High School in Ontario.

During the new 2008/09 school year, THINK Together, the largest provider of academically-focused after-school programs in California, will provide support to students at 21 schools in the Ontario-Montclair School District.
There is no cost to parents who enroll their children in THINK Together's programs because these after-school programs, designed to help students achieve their full potential, are funded with state and federal grants as well as investments from private individuals, corporations and foundations.
However, students enrolled in the THINK Together programs must attend each school-day afternoon for a minimum of three hours.
During that time, students receive a healthy snack and participate in various activities including: academic enrichment with an emphasis on improving language arts and math skills; homework help; and dynamic physical activity, an award-winning program called CATCH,  combined with nutrition education.
THINK Together serves more than 30,000 students across a four-county region of Southern California.
School's not on the THINK Together program are Howard, Kingsley, Mission, Monte Vista, Montera, Moreno and Ramona Elementary schools and Serrano and Vernon Middle schools.
Parents should contact their respective school's administrative office to find out more about the possibility of enrolling their children in the THINK Together programs.

Waste not that water

Representatives from the Inland Empire Utilities Agency and the Metropolitan Water District told the Ontario City Council on Tuesday that even further water rationing will likely be necessary by next year.

Councilman Jim Bowman said Ken Jeske, Ontario public works director, has a plan to tighten conservation efforts in the city, which he'll present at the next meeting Oct. 7.

The city of Ontario was granted about $5 million in state funding for a down payment assistance program to help about 120 first time home buyers move into Ontario Town Square at 3 and 3.5 percent simple interest.

Also, the city was awarded $1 million in a state grant to help with the planned Mercy House emergency intake center for the homeless on the 800 block of South Greenwood in Ontario. Construction is estimated to cost $2.3 million for the 15-bed facility, so the grant will help significantly, said Brent Schultz, Ontario housing manager.

Smiley Out Again

The Loveland Reporter-Herald reported today that Mark Smiley, former CEO and president of Ontario Chamber of Commerce, has resigned from his new job as CEO for the Loveland Chamber of Commerce in Colorado - before he even started.

Smiley was laid off by the Ontario chamber in June as a cost-cutting measure, Jennifer Resch-Silvestri, past chairwoman of the board of directors, has said.

Open session starts at 6:30 p.m.

Items on the agenda include:

The preparation of a supplemental Environmental Impact Report (SEIR) for the Oliver McMillan Guasti Plaza Specific Plan amendment. An amendment was made to plans for the historic wine village to include multi-family housing on the site due to changing market demands, a staff report states. The historic bungalows are to be retained on the site. Oliver McMillan will pay for the new study. The environmental impact of adding attached residences with densities from 25 to 40 dwelling units per acre will be prepared by David Evans and Associates, Inc. of Ontario.

The approval of Final Tract Map of the Ontario Town Square Project at the northeast corner of "B" Street and Euclid Avenue. The 2.36 acres will be subdivided into 3 lots for commercial use. Offsite infrastructure, such as storn drains, sewer, water, pavement, traffic signals and sidewalks, will be constructed by J.H. Snyder Co. and paid for by the Ontario Redevelopment Agency.

The approval of a reimbursement agreement between the city and the Redevelopment Agency for various capital improvement projects. A joint public hearing considers letting the agency pay the city back up to a total of $4,468,850 for the following six projects:

1. 1333 and 1425 South Bon View Avenue

2. Fire Station No. 4 - 1005 North Mountain Avenue

3. Fire Station No. 5 - 1530 East Fourth Street

4. Haven Avenue Pavement Project

5. Inland Empire Boulevard-Mercedes Pavement Project

6. Traffic Signal Pre-emption Devices for Emergency Vehicles
