They are marching for a perfect season.
For the past three months Ontario High School's marching band has been sweeping by their competition, taken the highest honors in all five of the tournaments they've entered.
The 148-member band, color guard and drum corps face their biggest challenge when they will be competing in the California State Band Championships this Saturday.
The event, which is sponsored by the Southern California Judging Association, will be held at San Gorgonio High School.
This is the first time they will be competing in an event of this type, said David Berry, the band's director.
"We've been blessed with great students who are diamonds in the rough," he said. "This year their absolute drive and determination to reach the best has been evident from the first day on."
The marching band has competed in five tournaments to date and has gathered 20 awards, two first place and 18 sweepstakes.
This year's show is based on the music from Broadway show "The Lion King."
The notion of competing in the championship was something Berry never considered until last month. Berry said he was told by association judges that if the marching band competed in one regional tournament and placed, it could qualify for the championship.
Coincidentally, the band was performing the next weekend, Nov. 1, at Surf City Tournament, a regional event, Berry said.
Berry said he elected not to tell his students.
"We're focused on doing our best, it would have been a distraction," he said.
Shirley Herrera, 17, the drum major, said after the band had competed, and earned another sweepstakes award, the members boarded the buses to go home just as after any other competition.
"All of a sudden they tell us to get off the buses. That's when Mr. Berry told us. People started crying and hugging," she said.
It was then they learned the historical significance, said Patrick Elias, 17, who plays the trumpet and has been in the marching band all four years.
Juliet Alba, 17, who plays the alto sax, said she never saw it coming.
"I was amazed and I couldn't believe it. I wanted someone to pinch me," Juliet said.
For Patrick and Shirley it is the best way to leave the band.
"I know I left a legacy for the school, for the band program," he said. "This is something you'll never forget."
The road to success has not been easy but the key, Juliet said, is keeping their focus on one tournament at a time.
"You can't lose focus of what is in front of you, that is the next tournament. You can't look ahead or you will lose focus of what you're doing," Patrick said.
The band has spent the last week fine tuning its music and adjusting the tempo, Shirley said.
Something that has worked to the band's advantage this year has been the recent growth in size, Shirley said.
"The bigger you are the better sound you have," she said.
Striving for excellence is nothing new to the band. More than 250 trophies line the walls of the band room. Many of those accolades the band has received in the past 10 years, Berry said.
"This is not an unusual year, except the state championship, we're going to be in a run for it," Berry said.
Right now the focus is on the more than 20 trophies that sit on two 6-foot tables at the front of the band room.
They stand as reminders of not only their accomplishments but the history they have made at the school, Patrick said.
"It's how far that we've come during the year," he said. "We look at this season and we've gone undefeated in all five (tournaments) but we have a shot for one more, the biggest one of the year."

Hundreds of students and their families joined the Bon View staff for an evening of food, fun, and learning on Oct. 28. as they hosted their annual family barbecue.
One of the goals for Ontario school's staff and families is to build the home-to-school partnership, and to grow more opportunities for families to participate at school, said Bon View's new Principal, Kristie Marino.
The barbecue was just that kind of event, as families and staff members enjoyed their meals and participated in crafts, games, face-painting, prizes, and raffles, too.
The first 100 students arriving at the barbecue received a free book of their choice. A disc jockey was on-hand to play music and facilitate the festivities.
When asked what his favorite part of the evening was, third-grader Ruben Luna replied, "The games were the best. I won a goldfish in the Ping Pong toss!"
There were several community members and businesses that participated as well.
The Ontario Police and Fire Departments were there along with the talking-squad car and fire engine for students to explore.
McGruff the Crime-Fighting Dog even made an appearance. The city provided their Rec-Mobile with crafts for families. Other participants included the 'Dug Out', Boy Scouts, Red Brick Pizza, McDonalds, and the school's 'Think Together' program.
Committee chairperson and third-grader teacher Shawnna Kitchen was very happy with the evening.
"The annual Bon View Elementary School BBQ is a great opportunity for teachers and staff to connect with our students and their families," she said. "Many local businesses donated their time and resources to participate as well. Every year it's so exciting to see the smiles spread out across our campus for a fun family night out!"

Earlier today, twins Natalie Delgado and Nicole Perales, from Ontario were on the show "Deal or No Deal." The women unfortunately were unsuccessful in their quest for $500,000, ending up with only $200.
Delgado and Perales were chosen out 22 twin contestants and had a chance to play for the top prize of $500,000 after their number was selected by the wheel at the top of the show.
So on Tuesday, election night, I thought I would be at my council meeting for at least an hour and miss out on some of the early reporting from the elections. But turns out the council was just as eager as me to get back to the television.
They completed their meeting in 14 minutes, according to a resident in attendance who was keeping track. That same resident mentioned to my colleague, David Allen, and myself that the previous record to his knowledge had been 29 minutes.
The funny thing was during the public comments of the meeting the city was criticized by a resident about the length of the meetings .
"Our meetings are getting shorter and shorter," Slyvester Brooks told the council.
Brooks said he had devised a plan to be able to get the meetings to go on longer, "start paying you by the hour."
The meetings were ending so quick that apparantly Brooks said they weren't even giving him enough time to get his second cup of coffee or cookie.
But Brooks wasn't completely upset with the council, he recognized that the lengths of the meetings had to do with the fact that the ciy, he said was really efficient.
I can't wait to see what he might say at the next meeting about this meeting.
While the nation celebrated the first African American as the president-elect of the United States of American, the Chaffey Joint Union High School District had their own celebration.
During the board meeting Tuesday night at Alta Loma High School, students of the school's choir sang Happy Birthday to Superintendent Mat Holton.
While the school's mascot brought out a cake with the numbered candles - 21, Holton in fact turned 41 that evening.
Nice hint.
This is a release from the people at Deal or No Deal
Natalie Delgado and Nicole Perales, twins from Ontario will be on today's episode of "Deal or No Deal" at 3:30 p.m. on channel 4. They are the lucky twins of out 22 twin contestants that had a chance to play the game for the top prize of $500,000 after their number was selected by the wheel at the top of the show.
Natalie is a hairdresser and Nicole is her assistant. Both are married and have kids and they live right down the street from each other. With the $500,000 they would like to open up a salon so they can continue pursuing their passion--hair.

Never underestimate the power of a little sticker.
It has come to my attention this morning on the way to work many business are giving away free items if you show them your "I Voted" sticker or if you tell them you voted.
While I was listening to Kevin and Bean on KROQ (106.7 FM) an employee or intern, named Mug, was talking about all the free stuff people were giving away because of Election Day.
"Oh say can you freeeee," Mug sang.
He followed the one line wonder by stuffing his face with a special Election Day Krispy Kreme donut - for free!
(This of course made me very hungry and jealous.)
Other places he said who are participating in the "free is for me" campaign are Starbucks, with a a cup of coffee, Ben & Jerry's is giving away a scoop of ice cream, and if you work near Hollywood, rumor has it Amoeba Music store is giving 20 percent off of your purchase today.
Just remember if you are going to take advantage of this special give-a-way pace yourself and finish strong.
**Let me know who else is giving away free goodies throughout the day by e-mailing me.

That the City Council adopt a sesolution approving a 2009 Preserve America Grant application (File No. PADV08-008) to develop a Heritage Tourism Plan and authorize the City Manager to execute a grant agreement with Preserve America upon grant award.
The total cost to develop the proposed Heritage Tourism Plan is estimated to be $40,000. The Preserve America grant would fund $20,000; and the grant requires a $20,000 local match.
