Hundreds of students and their families joined the Bon View staff for an evening of food, fun, and learning on Oct. 28. as they hosted their annual family barbecue.

One of the goals for Ontario school's staff and families is to build the home-to-school partnership, and to grow more opportunities for families to participate at school, said Bon View's new Principal, Kristie Marino.

The barbecue was just that kind of event, as families and staff members enjoyed their meals and participated in crafts, games, face-painting, prizes, and raffles, too.

The first 100 students arriving at the barbecue received a free book of their choice. A disc jockey was on-hand to play music and facilitate the festivities.

When asked what his favorite part of the evening was, third-grader Ruben Luna replied, "The games were the best. I won a goldfish in the Ping Pong toss!"

There were several community members and businesses that participated as well.
The Ontario Police and Fire Departments were there along with the talking-squad car and fire engine for students to explore.

McGruff the Crime-Fighting Dog even made an appearance. The city provided their Rec-Mobile with crafts for families. Other participants included the 'Dug Out', Boy Scouts, Red Brick Pizza, McDonalds, and the school's 'Think Together' program.

Committee chairperson and third-grader teacher Shawnna Kitchen was very happy with the evening.

"The annual Bon View Elementary School BBQ is a great opportunity for teachers and staff to connect with our students and their families," she said. "Many local businesses donated their time and resources to participate as well. Every year it's so exciting to see the smiles spread out across our campus for a fun family night out!"
