At the meeting Tuesday night the council recognized Brix, one of four K-9 with the Ontario Police Department. After 9 and half years with the department Brix, a German Shepard, is retiring.
He began his service with the department July 1999 at only 18 months. During his tenure he has been involved in more than 1400 K-9 searches which resulted in more than 1300 arrest and assists.
The following is a summary from the city's report of "Brix" acheivements while serving the city of Ontario.
Since being trained in the detection of narcotics in 2000, "Brix" is responsible for the seizure of 930 pounds of marijuana, 5 pounds of methamphetamine, 2 pounds of cocaine, and 48 pints of codeine.
In 2006, "Brix" located and caused a suspect to surrender after a lengthy pursuit and the suspect forcing his way into an innocent victim's home.
In 2006, "Brix" located a buried weapon used in a gang shooting outside the Hilton hotel.
In 2007, "Brix" located and apprehended an armed robbery suspect hiding in a shed, minutes after fleeing from officers who were chasing him.
In 2008, "Brix" was assisted in the location of a burglary suspect who was a parolee-at-large. "Brix" located the suspect hiding in a residence resulting in the suspect surrendering.
