Mark Your Calendar: Fundraiser for student who has cancer

Lehigh Elementary School invites the community to help the family of third-grade student Wendy Maria Avendano, who is diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor.

In an e-mail wrote to colleagues of the school, Principal Anthony Oritz said Wendy's mother has stopped working in order to take care of her daughter and that they are struggling.

The school has set up a fundraiser at Island's Restaurant from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at 5220 Moreno St., Montclair.

The Avendano family will collect 20 percent of food and beverage purchases from the evening.

"The school is also doing what they can with popcorn sales and staff collections, but we need something more," Ortiz wrote in the e-mail.
