March 2009 Archives

Here is a release I received from the city of Ontario:

It's a toe-tapping, hand-clapping introduction to spring at the master-planned community of Edenglen in Ontario--where everyone is invited to move to the groove or simply soak up the beautiful sights and sounds of a festive afternoon of music in the park.

"The residents of Edenglen love to gather and celebrate the approach of summer," shares Adrian Foley, President of Brookfield Southland. "And because our concert event was such a great success last year, we wanted to invite the public to join us. The band is great and we feel confident that this year will be every bit as fun as it was last year."

Guests will first want to tour the stylish Edenglen models and then are encouraged to join friends and residents at Pinheiro Park on Saturday, April 4th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for "Rock the Lawn," a popular community event where folks will be treated to the musical talents of "The Trip," Southern California's #1 cover band. It's a great, inexpensive way to enjoy the afternoon for families of every age and stage. Simply bring a blanket and snap open your lawn chairs and let the music move you. Ice cream treats will be available for just $1 and the concert is free.

"Events like these are the perfect opportunity to introduce Edenglen in Ontario to home shoppers for its wonderful hometown charm and appeal," comments Foley.  "The Edenglen community is really an exceptional deal when you consider its beautiful homes, convenient location and generous amenities. And with its reasonable pricing from the mid $200,000s to the $500,000s, it's easy to see why so many home shoppers are now eagerly planning to call Edenglen home."

Friendly neighborhoods, tree-lined streets, and spacious lawns and parks are the finer points that developer Brookfield Homes refers to as its commitment to "Style, Warmth and Details." Brookfield Homes' promise of comfort and sophistication are also clearly apparent in their homes with open floorplans, stainless steel kitchen appliances, lavish bathrooms and spacious garages, while each recreational spot--whether it is a walking path or quiet park bench--inspires a sense of peace and community.

"Brookfield Homes' is very proud of what they have accomplished at Edenglen in Ontario. Every feature of this community, to the smallest detail, has been precisely crafted for the comfort and pleasure of its residents," shares Foley. "It is the kind of lifestyle that so many aspire to. It's a little slice of the American dream."

Residents are treated to sparkling pools, a Great Lawn, new parks, scenic walkways, and barbecue areas, while pet lovers enjoy their very own room to roam at the Bark Park. Popular Pinheiro Park plays host to numerous community events such as summer movies, live concerts and the annual Christmas Tree-Lighting Ceremony. Finally, there is The Clubhouse--a resort-like facility that treats residents to a TV lounge, a lively game room featuring classic arcade games and an impressive wraparound porch.

Edenglen commuters can count on convenient access to freeways for jobs in Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties. There is shopping at Ontario Mills and Victoria Gardens and many opportunities for fine and casual dining and entertainment close by. And residents can chose from three different elementary schools--Creekside Elementary is ranked in the 87th percentile in San Bernardino County--in the notable Mountain View School District. Colony High School is even within walking distance.

Edenglen features numerous Wi-Fi hotspots in several key locations, allowing for easy, on-the-go Internet access. And residents can also take advantage of the community's state-of-the-art fiber optics network, expected to offer advanced video, high-speed data and digital telephone capabilities.

Edenglen offers five distinctive neighborhoods in all--each appealing to a broad range of home shoppers--from young professionals to families, small, growing and mature. Architectural styles include Traditional, Spanish Colonial, Bungalow, Territorial Ranch, Monterey, Spanish and Cottage-inspired themes. Prices range from the mid-$200,000's to the mid $500,000's.

Veranda impresses with a neighborhood of executive-style single-family homes ranging from 3,498 to 4,314 square feet. Gatehouse homes enjoy their own private entryway courtyards and include four to six bedrooms. The Cottages are comfortable with detached homes featuring up to four bedrooms, while Portico embraces Southern California living with spacious townhomes that offer up to three bedrooms. And, finally, Belcourt is a stylish collection of one-, two- and three-story garden court condominiums with attached garages for extra storage and convenience.

Home shoppers are encouraged to come and see for themselves what makes Edenglen so special by touring these five unique and distinctive neighborhoods. From the 60 Freeway, exit Haven Avenue and continue traveling south. Make a left on Riverside Drive, turn right on Mill Creek, and left into Edenglen. The sales centers are open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., except on Wednesdays, when they are open by appointment only.

Brookfield Homes Southland is independently and locally operated with offices in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Orange Counties and is part of one of North America's largest homebuilding companies, Brookfield Homes Corporation.  The parent company also has community development and homebuilding operations in the San Francisco Bay area, San Diego area, Virginia, Maryland, and Hawaii.  Listed on the New York Stock Exchange, Brookfield Homes is a public company.  Additional information regarding the company and its forthcoming Edenglen community is available by visiting www.edenglen.com.

Race to the finish line

The Ontario Reign in conjunction with K-FROG are sponsoring the annual Rubber Ducky Regatta, April 25 at the University of Redlands.
The event, which benefits the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha foundation, is a race with rubber ducky for a chance to win $1 million. The community still has the chance to go online and adopt a duck for $5 or adopt a quackpack for $20.
The "million dollar duck," will be randomly selected and the winning duck. If that duck crosses the finish line first then that adoptee wins the grand prize.
The Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation includes their Pediatric Trauma Program for kids that are seriously ill. For more information visit www.duckrace.com/cnhfoundation or call (877) 597-1770.
So on Monday I attended the grand opening of King Taco in Ontario. I thought it would be of some siginficance since this was the taco chain's first Inland Empire location. I guess I didn't expect to see so many people waiting in line.
I was told, patrons waited an average of 30 to 40 minutes to get their food.
As I walked around the store I ran into Gregorio Olguin of Ontario. I thought I would share his story because he has been going to King Taco for 40 years.
Olguin said he grew up eating there since he was three and he has taken his children there as well.
Once a week he and his family travel to the 3rd Street Los Angeles location to eat and to this date he said he has not found tacos with meat that have a better marinade.
"They've had me hooked," he said. "I have a taco stand myself but this place beats all taco shops everywhere."
The restaurant is located at 406 N Mountain Avenue, the closest cross street is D Street.
Members at Redeemer Luthern Church are busy coordinatings some community events for the next couple of weeks.
On April 18 the church will be holding the Electrical Recycling Drive from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
For each pound of display electronics (computer monitors, televisions, laptops, and LCD's) the church receives 8 cents. All electronics will be accepted.
The church is bringing back Life Line Screening, provider of preventative screenings for an affordable rate.
Life Line Screening is to make people aware of an undetected health problem and encourage them to seek follow up care with their physician.
They will be at Redeemer Lutheran Church in the Woody Blanke Family Ministry Center May 12 beginning at 8:30 a.m.. For more information call (800) 897-9177 or visit their websitewww.lifelinescreening.com.

When the theatre department opens their show of "Fiddler on the Roof," students might do a double-take on some of the actors on stage.
Chances are they might find a teacher or counselor up there which will be filling roles in the high school's production of "Fiddler on the Roof."
I've learned that Tevye, the dairyman, will be played by the Chairperson of the Visual and Performing Arts, Dave Masterson.
The role of Yente, the Matchmaker, will be played by art history teacher Patty Gulino.
Golde, Tevye's wife, will be filled by counselor Christine Jeffery.  Long time Chaffey educator Dr. Gabe Pettrocelli, Director of CJUHSD Orchestra Tom Mazur and Assistant Principal Bart Goldstein and Drama partner David Billman, of Billman/Masterson Productions will also have roles in upcoming performances. I'm told there will be a total of 80 cast members.
The show opens April 30 and and will show Fridays, Saturday, Sundays and Monday, thru Sunday, May 10 in the Gardiner W. Spring Auditorium, located at 1245 North Euclid Avenue in Ontario, CA.
Evening shows are at 7 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 2p.m. There will not be a show the first Saturday, May 2.
There will be a special "Family Home Evening" on May 4 at 7 p.m. All seats will be discounted to $7.
Tickets are available at www.chsthespians.com for $10 and $12.
All seats are "first-come-first-seated" with doors opening one half hour before show time.

Prior to today, the only time you could grab some King Taco in the Inland Empire was if the fair was in town or if you were at one of two races at the Auto Club Speedway.
The Mexican food provider only had temporary locations at both of those locations but now it has settled roots in the Inland Empire by opening its first restaurant in Ontario.
The restaurant, I'm told by a reader opened this morning and is located on 406 N Mountain Avenue or call (909) 933-9150.
Their website mentions that they also have a Fontana location opening soon.

Ontario's Library and Solid Waste Departments will co-sponsor a special reading club in an effort to encourage children to become aware of conservation efforts and teach them about recycling.
The club is open to ages 3 - 13 and will be held the entire month of April at Ontario Main and Colony High Branch Libraries.

The PTA has also have received a generous donation from the Ontario City Employees Union AFSCME Local 3061 as well as volunteers for the event.
They are also getting an automotive magazine to come to the event and do a story for their May issue. Young said the community is coming together to help them during a time of need.
"With the economy in the state that it is, we're unable to raise enough funds for a lot of the school activities that the PTA funds," Young said.
The group is still taking pre-registration for anyone who wants to be part of the crafts fair or the if they want to show their car.

YUCAIPA - In this tight economy, money for fun and games can be hard to come by. But thanks to a couple of military service clubs in Yucaipa, our men and women in uniform will soon be putting paddle to ball.
On Tuesday, members of the American Legion Post 426 and VFW Post 7347 loaded a $600 ping pong table on the truck of Post 426 Commander, Clyde Kelley.
Once securely tied down, Kelley hauled the table to the USO at the Ontario International Airport. Games For Fun of San Bernardino donated the table to Post 426 for a fundraiser. And the Post held a raffle recently for the table.
Post member Don Scherneck won, but instead of keeping the table for himself, Scherneck asked Kelley to find a worthy organization to donate it to.
And what better organization than the USO (United Service Organizations)?
"Our members voted to give the table to the USO," Kelley said. "Our service men and women need (recreational outlets). This is a quality table."
Since 1941 USO has been the link that has connected the American public with our men and women in uniform. There are over 130 USO locations around the world that offer services such as free Internet and email access, libraries, housing assistance, family crisis counseling, support groups, nursery facilities and recreation rooms.
And now, when our troops and their families fly into Ontario Airport they can stop by the USO and play some ping pong.
"The USO is our troops' home away from home," said Sandi Moreno, USO at Ontario Business Development Director. "Sometimes they are here for as long as 12 hours waiting for a flight. The troops will love the table. It is monumental contribution to us."
For more information on making contributions to the USO contact Sandi Moreno at USO at Ontario.

I was in south Ontario the other day. Driving south on Mountain I noticed the King Taco restaurant that is being built along Mountain Avenue and D Street. I have to admit I always wondered where the restaurant was. For months, on my way home on the 10 Freeway, I would see the bright Fairplex sign announcing the arrival of King Taco.
"Coming Soon," was all the sign would say.
I'm glad to know where it is now I'll just have to figure out when it will open.
From the outside it looked like it was coming along pretty well. In fact they have signs letting people know they are accepting applications.
If you're interested call 1-800-KING TACO.

Building a better Ontario

| | Comments (0) |
Last weekend I attended the opening ceremonies for Ontario Western Little League. The event paid homage to one of their longtime players, Michael Ortiz.
At that event was Mayor Paul Leon. A former little leaguer himself, Leon said he was thrilled to be at the event.
Leon who spoke to the community about the importance of little leagues, said he still remembers his coaches, team moms and dads.
"The future of Ontario is depending on how you model life around them," Leon said.
For Leon, being in the league is more than just baseball but its how kids are "introduced into life through baseball."
Playing baseball demonstrates kids the importance of things such as teamwork, he said.
"We're not just building a better baseball player, we're building a future," Leon said.
Last week I attended the 2009 Woman of the Year which was hosted by by Sen. Gloria Negrete McLeod, D-Montclair and Assemblymembers Norma J. Torres, D-Ontario and Wilmer Amina Carter in Ontario.
Mcleod and the assemblywomen each selected one woman. The cities from McLeod district were also asked to select their own woman of the year.
"They are unsung heroes for the community," Carter said. "They do a lot and don't even get the credit."
Among those recognized by the city of Ontario was Councilwoman Sheila Mautz who served on Planning Commission for 12 year. Chairwoman eight of those years.
Mautz was among 13 women honored
"We have chosen the women that have made some kind of an impact in their community," McLeod said.
She has been active in many local community organizations and a member of Kiwanis Club of Ontario, Crime Stoppers, and has volunteered for the California State Games Committee and the Goodwill Games.
The remaining women who were selected by their city was: Karen Haughey, Chino; Laura Morales, Colton; Marcia Richter, Montclair; Roberta Perlman-Hensen, Pomona; Lea Michelle Cash, Rialto; and Rachel Mendoza Clark, San Bernardino.
The unincorporated areas were Sister Mary Burgess Mckinney of Muscoy and Virginia Geil of Bloomington.
To read the full article about Mautz' recognition check out Friday's edition of the Ontario City News.

"It's a privilege to be a part of Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles," Odetto said. "I look forward to developing community partnerships and unsurpassed leadership programs that will help girls grow into self-confident, courageous and competent women -- our leaders of tomorrow."

Western Little League in Southwest Ontario will be holding their opening day of the baseball season on Saturday at 8 a.m.
The league which holds games at Homer Briggs Memorial Park are inviting the community to come out for their second annual pancake breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m.. The $5 suggested donation will be used to help the league with operation costs, Joey Serrano president of Western Little League said.
The league, which has 18 teams, has to pay for things such as baseballs, umpire and jersey for kids who make the all-star team, Serrano said.
"This year had been really hard for us because sponsorship is down," Serrano said. "There's a lot of stuff we've got to pay."
Ultimately, Serrano said they would like to buy a professional lawnmower for their field.
At 10 a.m. officials will kick off their season with the first pitch coming from members of Michael Ortiz' family.
Michael, 18, was the youngest killed in the Covina Massacre.
Serrano tells me that Michael was very active in the league as was his mother.
"Michael was a real good kid and played very well," Serrano said. "He's part of the baseball community and it's an honor to retire his number."
Michael's No.23 will be retired. Serrano said they will frame his jersey and hang it inside the building at Homer Briggs Park.
If you have any questions contact Joey Serrano at (909) 984-8157.

Seniors of the month

| | Comments (0) |
I got a phone recently from Marty Binney over at the Senior Center. He was calling me for two things, the first was to visit the senior center and the second was to tell me about a project he has started.
The project, "Highlighted Senior of the Month," is an effort to recognize the countless seniors that volunteer thier time at the center, he said.
So last week I went out to the center and got a tour of the facility and met some wonderful seniors. This months senior is Alma Greene, a front desk volunteer.
Binney said Greene doesn't just volunteer at the center but also lends a hand with the Phone Assurance Line for Senior(PALS).
He also told me about some of the past seniors he has nominated which include Lilian Thomas, Lucy Graciano, Winn Walker and Clara Argucia.
Thomas, he said besides volunteering at the center has run marathons, eight to be exact. When she is not running she is at the Ontario Senior Center helping with their PALS program.
Graciano can often be found in the kitchen or lunchroom of the senior center, Binney said.
"The man with the a gold heart," is how Binney describes Walker. For the past six years Walker has taught a woodcarving class at the center.
Then there's Argucia, who besides being a long time resident, has volunteered at the center for 13 years.
With out the help of these seniors, Binney said the center would not be the same.

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) West Valley Chapter, in partnership with the California Department of Corporations (DoC), is inviting senior citizens ages 55 years and older to attend a new training session for the "Seniors Against Fraud" (SAIF) program. My Dream for American Contest

Who knew that entering your kid in a contest could lead to $50 off of your tax preparation?

Well it can if they enter Liberty Tax Service's "My Dream for America Contest."

The essay/drawing contest is designed to encourage young people to share and capture their dreams and vision for the future of their country in a written essay, or in a drawing for children under 6.

Organizers of the contest said they are offering the discount "an effort to help stimulate our own local economy."

Day care and school groups and church and other youth organizations are encouraged to participate.

Cash prizes will be given for top "3" in each age group. The deadline for the contest is (not on tax day as some of you might have thought) April 15. Winners will be annoucned on April 20.

Here are the entry and prize details for the contest:

-Essay entries should be 150-200 words for young people who enter who are 7-18. Children who are 6 and under can submit drawings.

-Age group categories are: 6 & under, 7-11, 12-15, and 16-18.

Each entry needs to be taken to a local Liberty Tax Office by the April 15th deadline. Call 1-866-871-1040 to be directly connected to the nearest Liberty Tax location.

Good luck.

FROM THE AGENDA:
That the City Council adopt the attached Resolution supporting the Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Project.

The Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Project is anticipated to create over 37,000 jobs during construction, 3,500 permanent jobs during the first 20 years of operation and more than 500,000 construction-related jobs to build transit-oriented developments - generating an estimated $40 billion in economic benefits throughout the region.

BACKGROUND: The Foothill Extension Project is expected to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality and expand public transit options by adding light rail stations from Arcadia to Montclair. A feasibility study was recently conducted to evaluate extending the line further to the Los Angeles/Ontario International Airport. As such, the project is of critical importance to Ontario and its residents. The Foothill Extension is ready to be built - having its environment documents approved, right of way purchased, engineering and design at the stage necessary for design/build procurement and all cities along the corridor have signed agreements to move forward. On an expedited schedule, the Foothill Extension can be operational in 2013, adding more than 3.3 million passengers annually to the Metro system. However, the Metro Board's draft 2009 Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) currently includes funding for the project at the latest point necessary to meet commitments made under Los Angeles County Measure R, resulting in an unnecessary four year delay in the project--or a loss of more than 13 million rides on the system.

The Metro Board can amend the draft 2009 LRTP to expedite funding for the Foothill Extension Project at the level necessary to begin construction in 2010 and approve a Fund Transfer Agreement allowing the transfer of funds to the Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Construction Authority. These actions would avert the potential four year delay in construction.

At Tuesday's council meeting the City Council is expected to approve a resolution backing the construction of an NFL Stadium in the City of Industry.

In the report to the council, the city is backing the stadium because of the benefits to the city. The city could receive additional sales tax and transient occupancy tax revenues and the amount would depend on the number of games, events and entertainment activities held annually.

The report says: "Ontario is located within a short distance of the proposed project location and has the unique advantage of being serviced by LA/Ontario International Airport, nearly 50 hotels offering over 5,100 rooms, and three major freeways providing access to the stadium from the east."
