At Tuesday's council meeting, councilman Jim Bowman asked the city's Ken Jeske to speak on the water crisis plaguing the state.

Jeske told the council most of southern California's water comes from Northern California. He credited the city council for their leadership in being proactive in the situation.

One of the issues facing the city in the next couple of months is proposed increases to water rates by the Metropolitan Water District, Jeske said.

The district is expected to raise rates by 15 percent in September and possibly another 20 percent by the end of the year.

"Those are costs they city will be taking as we buy," he said.

With the proposed increased, Jeske urged residents and the council to look at ways to conserve water.

"Every gallon we save this year is a gallon we have for next year," he said. "We ask all residents to be very careful."

Last year the council passed a resolution urging residents and businesses to implement a 10 percent reduction in their water use.

For their part, the city is changing its landscape to be more water efficient.

Residents may want to consider cutting back on watering their grass, that's because about 70 percent of all the water a residents uses goes into their grass, Jeske said.

For conserving tips residents can call (909) 395- 2678 or (909) 395-2633.

In September, ExpressJet Airlines pulled the plug on 22 flights and JetBlue Airways ended its only flight out of the airport.

I recently spoke to Stuart Williams with Cub Scout Pack 306 and he informed that, Aric Rosenveldt, a 9-year old Webelos Cub Scout from Ontario was awarded the National Medal of Merit from the Boy Scouts of America.
The merit was given to him for saving his little brother's life in late 2007.
Since the review and award process is so lengthy the medal was awarded January 29 in a Pack Meeting with Aric's Cub Scout Pack, Williams said.
Apparently two weeks before the incident, Aric had just learned basic first aid, Williams said.
"So he recognized what was going on and use the heimlich to save his brother's life," he said.
Williams, who has been a scout leader for years said.

I'm sure you all recall the story I did a couple of weeks ago about classic movies being shown at the Granada.
For the past two months, Dave Perez, Ronald Anderson and 16-year-old Kurt Berntsen have shown the movies on Fridays and Saturdays.
Well this Friday they will entirely recreate the experience of coming to a theater in the late 1940s. The night will begin with a swing band performance followed by a re-enactment of a live radio show during that era, Berntsen said.
The movie "Hell's Angels" will be shown.
During Tuesday's council meeting, Berntsen invited Leon and the council to "pay tribute to the Ontarians."
"We need hereos Mr. Mayor not zeros," Berntsen said.
Bernsten, who was dress in a brown 1944 military uniform told the mayor if he attended that he would throw in the popcorn for free.
Which prompted councilmember Jim Bowman to say "how can we resist."
The event will begin at 4:30 at the Granada Theater on Euclid Avenue.

The City also remembers the four officers killed in the line of duty while serving Ontario: Bernard Green, Louis Deluisse, Russell Grower and Dick Hyche. In addition, we honor the memory of Deputy Erik Telen, a former Ontario officer who lost his life on August 21, 2001 while serving for the Fresno County Sheriff's Department.
All residents, schools, churches and businesses in Ontario are invited to honor and remember all safety personnel.
Starting May 1, the public may purchase blue ribbon lapel pins for $1.50 at the front desk of the Ontario Police Department main station, 2500 South Archibald Avenue or the Mills Mall Station. West End Animal Shelter

| | Comments (1) |
As we evaluate the economic situation, we sometimes forget to think about how it affects the family dog or cat. I got an e-mail from Lynn Westbrook over at West End Animal shelter reminding me that often times during a downturn in the economy, many pets are being released and abandoned.
The shelter, which is a no-kill facility can save a life but she says it needs the help of people in the community. A $50  donation can rescue a dog or cat from a county kill facility.
"We will bring them to Westend Shelter for Animals where the pet will be safe until it can placed in a loving, forever home," she said.
The shelter also offers low cost vaccination clinics and refers the community to low cost spay/neuter options.
For more information, please visit our website at http://www.westendshelter.com and click on Donations.
Westend Shelter for Animals is located on 1010 E. Mission Blvd, Ontario. For information call: (909) 947-3517.
