Salvation Army still in need of donations

Staff at the Salvation Army are still struggling to gather enough donations for its annual "Back to School Shopping Spree."

The Ontario -based Salvation Army, which serves 10 cities in the Inland Empire, has seen a 22 percent decrease in donations inthe past year, while the number of its clients has increased.

Because of the downturn in donations, Malena Bell said the Salvation Army is struggling to sponsor the 200 children.

In the past, the shopping spree was a partnership between Salvation Army and Mervyns department stores. The department store chain would provide a $100 shopping spree for 100 kids, Bell said, and the Salvation Army sponsored another 100 kids.

Kohl's is partnering with Salvation Army to fund 60 kids for its shopping-spree event, Bell said.

That still leaves 135 kids that need to be sponsored, or $14,000 to raise. But staff has only been able to raise $455, she said.

"If we don't raise it, it'll be less," she said.

The pressure is on to get the assistance, since children in their cities start school by Aug 10.
