Supes tap Ontario city manager for CAO post

County Board of Supervisors Chairman Gary Ovitt has announced Ontario City Manager Greg Devereaux as San Bernardino's new County Administrative Officer. Devereaux replaces former County Administrative Officer Mark Uffer, who was dismissed from his post in November.
The board recently met in closed session to review applications and discuss potential candidates for the position, which pays $274,000 a year.
As Ontario's city manager of 12 years, Devereaux helped bolster the city's economy, build its cash reserves and launched several successful redevelopment projects, including the construction of Citizens Business Bank Arena.
Having built a reputation for his work on redevelopment projects and money management, Devereaux ensured that Ontario's New Model Colony, 13 square miles of former dairy land, will be developed as a planned community. Once built, it is expected to house 120,000 new residents along with retail and recreational space by 2025.
Devereaux's 10-year contract will pay him $305,000 per year, which is the equivalent to his salary as Ontario's city manager, said county spokesman David Wert.
Devereaux applied last week for the job, Wert said, adding that no interviews of the more than 200 candidates were conducted by the board as a whole.
"I do know some board members talked to some of the candidates," said Wert, also adding the board didnt conduct a recruitment or conduct interviews when it hired Uffer to the job on September of 2004.
On a bi-weekly basis, Devereaux will get $384.62 in benefits and shall be provided 160 hours of administrative leave time per year in lieu of a prorated amount. He will also have $16,500 contributed on his behalf bi-weekly to the county's 401 plan or 457 deferred compensation plan.
