Ontario-Upland Lions Club Student Speaker Contest

| | Comments (6)

Ontario-Upland Lions Club secretary, Martha Hebert, submitted the following:

Recently the Ontario-Upland Lions Club held its annual Student Speaker Contest at the Ontario Elks Lodge.  Lion Barbara Bordenkircher, chairperson for the contest had four students from Claremont and Damien High Schools participating.

The topic for this year's contest was "Universal Healthcare - How will it affect us?" The winner was Zachary Ramsey a sophomore from Claremont High School and received $75.00.  Finalists were Perry Osgood and Annu Ratan from Claremont High School and Colin Bloom from Damien High School and each received $25.00.

It is interesting how so many students can take a topic and each one come up with a different view to present.  The students spent time in research and debated the pros and cons of universal health cares and the affects it would make on our country.   Thanks to the students for excellent speeches, but unfortunately we could only have one winner.

The winner will compete against winners of other clubs in the Foothill Region, Zone A Contest on Thursday, March 4 at Lions Center West in Rancho Cucamonga.

Lion Barbara presented Certificates of Appreciation and Club Pens to Mr. Patrick King, Ms. Sharon Easterling, and Ms. Marilyn Anderson for their challenging task of judging the contest.

This was the 73rd Annual Contest for the Lions Multiple District Four of California.  Each year the California Lions provide an opportunity for students, including foreign exchange students, grades 9-12 for competitive public speaking on a subject of vital interest to the contestants and to the American people.   The contestants are eligible to win scholarships at each of the six levels they participate in.  The overall winner will receive total of $21,325 in scholarships to be used at any college, university, trade school or any other school approved by the Lions Fourth District Student Speaker Foundation, Inc.
