News from Congressman Baca about the Census

In preparation for Census Day 2010 on April 1, Congressman Joe Baca (D-Rialto) today announced that some areas in the Inland Empire are falling behind the rest of the county in mailing back their 2010 Census forms.  Nationally, 52 percent of all households have mailed back their forms so far, but the overall mail participation rate for San Bernardino County is lagging behind at 46 percent.

"We must work so that all Inland residents understand the critical importance of an accurate count for the 2010 Census," said Congressman Baca.  "Unfortunately, on Census Day, too many communities in the Inland Empire are still lagging in participation for the current Census.  Census data is used by the federal government to make a number of vital funding decisions in our communities for everything from housing, to education, to law enforcement, health and judicial services.  It is absolutely critical that every household mail back their completed 2010 Census form as soon as possible."

Every household that fails to send back their census form by mail must be visited by a census taker starting in May - at a significant taxpayer cost.  For every percentage point increase in mail response, taxpayers will save an estimated $85 million in federal funds, that otherwise would be used to send census takers to collect responses in person from households that didn't mail back the form.

Current 2010 Census mail participation rates for cities in the 43rd Congressional District include:

  • City of San Bernardino - 43%
  • City of Rialto - 46%
  • City of Fontana - 45%
  • City of Ontario - 46%
  • City of Colton - 42%

Inland Empire residents who have been taunted by commercials for Sonic Drive-In restaurants that are too far away for a quick tots and slushes fix have just a few months to wait.

Ontario-based Keystone Restaurant Group will be opening a location in Rancho Cucamonga, across from the Ontario Mills mall, in May.

"We're a new brand in the area and of course there has been a lot of new customers wanting to see what the brand is about," said Keleni Suliafu, a representative of Keystone.

Sonic serves a wide array of food including hamburgers, hot dogs, other sandwiches, breakfast food and many drink varieties.

Keystone operates 10 other Sonic franchises in the state. The Rancho Cucamonga location is its third in Southern California; it operates locations in Victorville and Palmdale.

There are 10 Sonic locations in Southern California, including one in Anaheim owned by a different franchisee.

The group is looking to hire between 60 and 70 employees at the Rancho restaurant over the next couple of months.

The slow economy did not deter the restaurant group from pursuing the location.

"We feel we want to be able to continue to help the economy grow, not by being apprehensive because of what the market is. We want to move forward and help stimulate that," Suliafu said.

After looking for a good market to open a new location, Keystone decided the spot across the street from the Mills was a perfect opportunity.

"This is a prime location for us," Suliafu said. "The traffic flow there is right for us as well. Even though there's a lot of competitors in the area we feel we have a niche none of our other competitors have."

And patrons should expect to see employees on wheels when they skate out the orders.

"Sonic made it mandatory nationwide from corporation-owned restaurants, including all the franchisees, to go back to all the values Sonic was built on - which (includes) the skating car hops," Suliafu said.

Sonic headquarters are in Oklahoma and officials have been planning to expand their reach into Southern California for some time.

"We've had a store in Anaheim for a number of years and only recently in the past two years began to expand into the greater Los Angeles Basin," said Drew Ritger, senior vice president of business development and planning for Sonic Corp.

The corporation is planning another 30 locations in the region, assuming the economy continues to pick up. There are more than 3,500 locations nationwide.

"We've done well in Southern California," Ritger said. "We've been very pleased with how the brand has been received. Southern California is such a natural for drive-in restaurants. The climate is good generally speaking. It's a very mobile society."

Each day dogs and cats are taken to animal shelters and humane societies by someone who can either not afford to keep the pet any longer, for a variety of reasons.  Often times, an animal will wind up in a shelter because it has either run away, injured, or surrendered by owners who are no longer able to care for it.  The traffic of pets into animal shelters has significantly risen as the economy has suffered and in many cases the increase in population to any one of these kinds of shelters may be between 300-350 pets daily.  The overcrowding of homeless animals has created a high rate of euthanization.

I'm sure some of you have heard about My Delight CupCakery in Ontario. They have a small shop on Mountain Avenue and make gourmet cupcakes in a variety of flavors from the classic red velvet to their signature breakfast cake.
Every Monday they unveil their flavor of the week. You can learn what the new creation is every week by visiting My Delight CupCakery in Ontario or logging onto their Facebook.
Well, today I happen to be down there for an assignment and learned their flavor is Thin Mint.
That's right. Baker Naomi Moreno has created a cupcake in honor of the Girl Scout cookie mania.
Here's the description on their facebook page:
"Rich chocolate cake with thin mint pieces baked inside, frosted with a delicious mint buttercream, and topped with a chocolate drizzle and (of course) a Girl Scout Thin Mint cookie."
Also, I'm told by owners Naomi and her mother Melinda that this whole month the flavor of the week will be green inspired in honor of St. Patty's. In fact the word is that even their red velvet cupcake might go green, so stay tuned.

On Saturday the cupcakery will be giving away free mini "breakfast cake" cupcakes on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The giveaway which is being referred to as "Bringing home the Bacon," is in honor of the cupcake shop's recent victory at Los Angeles' Annual Cupcake Challenge.
Owners Melinda and Naomi Moreno's, mother and daughter, "Breakfast Cake" and won 1st place in the "Most Original" category. They also won 2nd place in "Best Overall" category.
The cupcake shop was the only one in the Inland Empire competing in the Feb. 20 challenge, Melinda said.
The cupcake is described as a "light and fluffy buttermilk cupcake loaded with bits of applewood smoked bacon. It's iced with buttery maple frosting and topped with freshly crumbled bacon bits."
