Lucky 7 Stables moving to a new home

It has been almost 20 years since Lucky 7 Stables first hung its sign on the corner of Philadelphia Street and Cypress Avenue.

Throughout the years, horses have come and gone. Beginners evolved into avid, experienced riders.

And now this humble, intimate haven for horses and children is doing some growing up of its own, moving to a 10-acre site a couple of miles away to make way for the expanding Ontario Christian High School.

Tucked behind a wall of green vines, the small stable has been a favored after-school place for children in the area by keeping them occupied, said Janet Turgetto, a longtime riding instructor at the stables.

"Cathe Norvell first began the stables with the intention of

keeping horses available for people who may not otherwise be able to afford the experience of owning or working around horses," she said, adding that Norvell, the owner of Lucky 7, had leased the property and worked to keep the facility open and affordable.

About five years ago, the property owner passed away and Ontario Christian purchased the property, with the school making clear its plans to expand. On Monday, construction crews began to demolish what was left of the stables.

There were only 17 horses and an old custom-made barn when the stables first opened, Turgetto said.

Now, the stables welcomes 60 horses and about 50 clients. There are also now two barns and 14 corrals to house the horses.

For the past month Turgetto, volunteers and even horse owners have been moving the stables, piece-by-piece to the new location at the corner of Chino and Vineyard avenues. Arena rails, rows of corrals and even a roundpen are already there. The new stables will officially open May 1.

The change means there will be more room to explore the different aspects of riding and caring for horses, Turgetto said.

Another feature - and possible most exciting - is an off-road course with hills to climb, she said.

"It's going to be awesome and great asset for Ontario to have this," she said.

Danielle Decker-Curry of Montclair has been bringing her daughter, August, to the stables for riding lessons.

"My husband and I were leasing a horse at first but now, after two years of riding we have bought her a horse," she said.

Decker-Curry, who grew up in the area, said she never knew the stables was there until August began taking the lessons.

"I think the people are so wonderful, and they teach to each kids' style," she said. "You have that community feel when I come here."

Prior to coming to the stables eight years ago, William Rahn took his daughter, Randi, to other horse stables. None of them worked out.

"The people that run the place really have the kids in mind," he said. "It's about learning how to understand and take care of the animals."

At Lucky 7 stables, student riders meet with Turgetto anywhere from once a week to several times per week.

Aside from lessons, riders also learn how to care for their horses and medicate them. About once a year, a veterinarian in the area comes in to offer insight about horse care. The mission is that riders know the basic care of their animals just in case they ever had to wrap a leg in an emergency.

"It's part of the responsibility of taking care of something," Turgetto said. "This instills in them that this is a huge responsibility."

But the lessons the children learn while riding aren't confined to the rails of the arena, she said, adding that many of the younger riders learn how to become independent and responsible adults.

Since then Rahn brought Randi to Lucky 7, he has bought her a horse that he says she can care for on her own. Just this month, Randi, now 18, became the owner of her second horse. She has taken up a part-time job to help pay for the boarding and feed.

"When you have a bad day, your horse doesn't know it," she said. "I like to spend time with my horses because they don't hold grudges."

And rain or shine, she can be found at Lucky 7, her father said.

"She's always been good with her homework, not get into drugs," he said. "It's because she had this to not get herself in trouble."
