'Bionic Woman' actress to lead workshop in Ontario

Lindsay Wagner used to play someone who achieved greatness through science, using amazing powers given to her through man- made robotic limbs.

But now she wants to help people flex some strength of their own - not through science, but through natural, old- fashioned willpower.

The actress, best known for her late-1970s TV role as synthetic superhuman Jaime Sommers in "The Bionic Woman," will be in town Saturday and Sunday leading a two-day self- help therapy workshop focused on using the the mind and body to overcome personal obstacles.

The workshop, called "Quiet the Mind and Open the Heart," helps participants deal with personal issues in a relaxed and nonconfrontational environment, Wagner said.

"Everybody works on what they want to work on," she said. "We all have some unhealed wounds from our past, but there are techniques that I have found that have worked well for me."

All through her young-adult life, Wagner said, she suffered from stomach ulcers. When doctors suggested surgery, she began looking at alternatives. It was then that the mother of a former boyfriend suggested a center for spiritual living, which took a holistic approach to healing.

Wagner said she soon learned that her chronic illness could be attributed to the stresses in her life.

"My family went through a lot of problems; there was violence and it was tumultuous," she said.

Her coping mechanism was to brush aside her problems instead of dealing with them. Wagner said that ultimately led to her illnesses.

Instead of focusing on just her ulcers, Wagner said her treatment also put the spotlight on her personal issues through the use of meditation, acupuncture and writing down her feelings in a journal.

"I was learning so much about this that within six weeks my ulcers were completely gone," she said.

Since then, the Palmdale resident has taken what she has learned and applied it not only in her daily life but in leading workshops throughout the world.

"It became a natural extension of what I was doing with my career," she said.

Her holistic knowledge grew along with her popularity, leading her to make sure she took positive roles such as "The Bionic Woman."

"The morals on the show are what made me identify, and that is really important in the roles that I play," Wagner said.

In the 1990s, however, Wagner pulled away from acting. The cable industry changed television and, according to Wagner, led to a greater emphasis on sex and violence.

Stepping away allowed Wagner the time to focus on her private practice. The actress had been providing individual self-help lessons up to that point.

By word of mouth, her practice became so popular that she began leading full workshops.

Rancho Cucamonga residents Jack and Suki DeLance learned about Wagner's workshops in February.

Interested in attending a workshop, Jack said he inquired about the nearest location, only to learn that there weren't any around.

He said he began working with the actress and her publicist, eventually getting her to appear in Ontario.

"We all need the time to take care of ourselves, and this is one of the best methods," he said. "This workshop will help at how we look at ourselves and really how we can change within."

Wagner will lead the workshops Saturday and Sunday at Ayres Boutique Suites, 204 N. Vineyard Ave., Ontario.

Tuition for the two-day event is $210.
