Report projects slow recovery for ONT
Three decades. Maybe more.
That's the new projected timetable for L.A./Ontario International Airport to return to the success it enjoyed before the fuel crisis and recession combined to cripple its passenger traffic levels.
The Ontario airport hit its peak in 2007, when it handled 7.2 million passengers.
But with an estimated growth of 1.5 percent annually, the new projection shows that the Ontario airport won't see that kind of traffic again until 2040, said Warren Adams of Jacobs Consultancy, the firm that made the projections in a report for Los Angeles World Airports, owner of the Ontario airport.
The report also found that the reduction in airline passengers has led to increased costs for airlines doing business at ONT.
Reducing that cost would not result in an increase in air service from airlines in the short term, but "doing so could be an important step in the long-term growth in air service from incumbent airlines and in attracting competitive air service from new-entrant airlines," the report stated.
Mike Molina, spokesman for Los Angeles World Airports, said he and the Board of Airport Commissioners were shocked by the figures. LAWA has operated the Ontario airport since 1967.
The numbers in the Jacobs report are based on the Terminal Area Forecast, which is provided by the Federal Aviation Administration. That forecast was updated in December, Molina said.
In 2005, the FAA assumed ONT would average an annual growth rate of 3 percent. But even at that rate, Molina said, the airport wouldn't reach its 2008 passenger levels until 2024.
"Projections are projections," he said. "We will continue to do what we can. The results aren't as apparent, but LAWA continues to market the airport to airlines on a daily basis, to return traffic to ONT."
<NO1><NO>Airlines, Molina said, usually base their decisions on new routes on passenger capacity, not FAA forecasts.
The Jacobs finding contradicts a report from the Southern California Association of Governments a few years ago that predicted ONT would reach 30 million annual passengers by 2030, said Councilman Alan Wapner, Ontario's liaison for LAWA.
Ontario officials often point to the SCAG report when promoting the airport.
"We will carefully review the report prepared for LAWA by Jacobs Consultancy and provide formal comments within a few weeks," Wapner said.
But Wapner is concerned about passenger traffic, adding that since 2007, traffic has plummeted more than 32 percent.
Airlines serving ONT have announced flight schedule reductions of nearly 8 percent for the last six months of this year, he said.
"There must be a recognition that a fundamental conflict exists by LAWA owning and operating competing airports in the current and future Southern California economy," Wapner said.
"This conflict must be addressed as a prerequisite to achieving true airport regionalization and restoring ONT as an economic engine for the region."

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.
