Founder of Cardenas markets passes away

The owner of Cardenas market, which is headquartered in Ontario, passed away last week. My colleague Neil Nisperos is working on an update. Here is what we have.

Here is a statement, released today, from assemblymember Jose Medina, D-Riverside, on the passing of Jesus Cardenas:

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jesus Cardenas, the founder and owner of Cardenas Markets. Mr. Cardenas came from modest beginnings and through his hard work, went on to achieve huge recognition in the community as a successful Latino business owner. His family will carry on his memory through their continued participation in the community. My thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family at this time. I will ask my colleagues in the Assembly to join me in adjourning in his memory.”

Ontario Councilwoman Debra Dorst-Porada offers event information

You can count on Councilwoman Debra Dorst-Porada to provide you with the latest happening in the city.
At the March 5 council meeting, Dorst-Porada took the opportunity during council comments, to talk about a variety of things residents should know.
First she started out by congratulating the Chaffey High Academic Decathlon team which won the San Bernardino County competition in February. This marks the fourth win in five years for the school, she said.
“I’m so excited for these kids to be able to pull it off another time, they worked so hard,” she said.
Wish them luck because they are now competing in the state competition this weekend in Sacramento.
Dorst-Porada said she, Barbara Hartley and Sheila Mautz recent attended an event recognizing the Police Explorers.
“Another great group of kids. Without those kids we just don’t know what we would do without them,” she said about their involvement in various community events.
Save the dates: the Emporia Arts District will hold an artwalk on Saturday in the evening. Meanwhile, Ontario Heritage is planning a downtown walking tour on March 23 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Ontario council recognizes outgoing commissioners

Outgoing commissioners Ruby Levitt, Ron Newton and Barbara Hartley were recognized at the council meeting for their many years of service to their community.
The council members heaped accolades to trio who were in attendance.
Councilman Jim Bowman told the trio they are part of fixtures here that helped Ontario grow to where it is today.
“On behalf of the City Council I would like to express our deepest appreciation for your long tenured service to our community and its citizens,” he said.
Councilwoman Debra Dorst-Porada said that she knows the outgoing commissioners will stay involved in the community.
“We have three fabulous people here who have given so much of their time, and taking away from their family, we truly, truly appreciate what you’ve done,” she said.
Levitt had served on the library board, Hartley was a planning commissioner and Newton a parks commissioner.
Councilman Alan Wapner told the trio that their service as commissioners was just the tip of the iceberg of your public service to the community of Ontario. Wapner said all of them have spent most of their lives serving the community.
Hartley was a 40-year city employee and has remained active by serving eight years on the commission. Levitt has been involved in the city for at least 20 years while Newton has also spent two decades as a member of the Mountain View School Board along with volunteer duties with the city, Wapner said.
“I hate to say it, but I wish you folks that were interested in running for City Council because we need folks running for city council that have a proven record of committing their service to this city,” Wapner said.

Ontario Firefighters Association sets St. Patrick’s events

Ontario safety officials participate in tourney

Resident Ruben Valencia came to the March 5 City Council meeting to inform the council how well the city’s police and fire department did at the softball fundraiser tournament.
According to Valencia, money was raised for the Ontario and Chaffey baseball programs, although he did not provide an amount.
“I know the police department are proud they took the trophy this year. I was amazed to see the police chief (Eric Hopley) glad to report that he actually had a base hit. As far as the fire chief, we already told him he needs to find a batting cage,” he said.
But, Valencia said, the tournament was great because it recognizes youth in the community and can help them excel and have extracurricular activities.
