Ontario City Council race: Porada and Avila

Paul Vincent Avila has ousted councilwoman Sheila Mautz for a seat on the council. If Avila’s name sounds familiar is because he has long served (and cause issues) as a Ontario-Montclair School District Board of Trustee.

Councilwoman Debra Porada, who had maintained a lead throughout the night, won her reelection bid.

Both Avila and Porada jumped out to an early lead when the initial results were released last night. At one point, less than 650 votes separated Avila and Mautz. As the votes, counted by the San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters, trickled in through the night Avila widen his lead over the incumbent by more than 1,200 votes.

Porada and Mautz were facing opposition from some familiar faces and first-timers.

Avila is no stranger to the race, having run for a spot on the city council previously. Candidates John Lira and Paul Mim Mack, both made a run for a spot on the dais in the last council race. Also vying for a seat on the council were retiree Robert Tippin and Ruben Valencia.
