Monday's meeting of the Recreation and Parks Commission has been cancelled. Due to the observance of Memorial Day on May 28, the next regular meeting will be held on May 21 at 6 p.m. at the Ontario Senior Center.
Put on your walking shoes. The city of Ontario will be launching the Active Adult Walking Club for ages 50 and older. This program will promote the "Healthy Ontario" initiative. 
Officials hope the program will create a social opportunity for active adults which makes walking and fitness fun. Starting March 13 and going on throughout the year, the group will meet most Tuesdays at the Ontario Senior Center, except the first Tuesday of the month. from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. 
The Ontario Senior center is located at 225 East "B" Street.

Join staff at the Recreation and Community Services Department on Halloween for the annual Halloween and Parade Contest.
Held at the Ontario Senior Center, the event will include a costume parade, illusionist Joel Ward will be entertaining the audience with his Halloween show.
Residents are encouraged to dress up. Rosette ribbons will be awarded for the following categories: creepiest, best look a-like, most unique or most cute and colorful costumes.
Every participant will receive a goody bag to collect their treats and free participation ribbon. Refreshments will be provided after the event.
Event begins at 2:15 p.m. and the parade will be at 3:45 p.m.

The Ontario Recreation and Community Services Department will offer Exploratory Kitchen from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Dorothy A. Quesada Community Center.
This free program was designed by and for teens ages 12 to 18 and is intended to give teenagers a more hands-on approach to preparing healthy meals independently.

The city of Ontario Recreation and Community Services Department will be hosting a free Summer Food Service Program at three community centers throughout the city.
Starting on June 21 and ending on Aug. 6, free lunch will be served to in-need youth 18 years of age or younger a the Anthony Munoz Community Center as well as the Dorothy A. Quesada Community Center between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Meals will also be served at De Anza Community and Teen Center between the hours of noon and 2 p.m.

Outstanding senior

Lois Scott has been named this month's Ontario senior of the month by Marty Binney.
Binney, who works at the Senior Center said he chose Scott because of her compassion for the commnity.
Scott, Binney said, was also nominated by the Ontario Recreation and Community Services department for the 2009 Valor award.
"Lois contributions to the City of Ontario haven't gone unnoticed. She is truly deserving of the recognition she's received and then some," he said.

Children 5 to 12 will explore the creative world of sculpture. Take home a masterpiece. Preregistration is required. Begins at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, Jun. 25, Colony High Branch Library, 3850 E. Riverside Dr., Ontario. Cost: free. Information: (909) 395-2014. 

The Ontario Recreation and Community Services department will be holding a summer kick-off party at Veteran Memorial Park at the corner of Grove Avenue and "D" Street on June 11.
The party is to celebrate the end of the school year and the start of the summer.
The event is from noon to 3 p.m.

We are approaching summertime and that can only mean one thing, kids will be jumping in the pool. That also means kids, for the first time, will be getting in pools.
De Anza Center is holding registrations this Saturday at 10 a.m. for their two-week session which begins on May 25.
The swim lessons, which are American Red Cross-certified will be held Monday through Friday for 30 minutes. The cost is $30 per swimmer.
Semi -private lesson are available for $60 and the instructor will customize the class for two students.
Swim class registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Residents in the community are encouraged to bring a friend and enjoy the Spring Easter Social and candy hunt. The Easter Bunny will stop and visit with children on April 9 at 4 p.m.
The event is free and will be held at De Anza Community and Teen Center.

Annual BBQ round up

The Ontario Recreation and Community Services is hosting their annual BBQ on Monday, May 18. The event which is open to the community is $7 and will be from 11:30 a.m til 1 p.m. at the Ontario Senior Center. For information contact (909) 395-2021.

Join the Easter Bunny for food, crafts, games and festive contests including an egg hunt on Saturday, April 4. The event, which will be held at the Westwind Community Center, will also include an opportunity for the public to take a photo with the Easter Bunny.

Lunch will be from 11 am - 1:30 p.m. The event is for all ages  (children ages 7 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult). It will $7 per person; (Non-Residents $9)

Tiny Tot Olympics

Registration is being taken for the 22nd annual Tot Olympics.  This Olympic-style event includes running, jumping, kicking and throwing for ages 3-6 years old.  Awards will be given to all children for each event.  Fee includes a T-shirt, ribbons, memory photo frame and refreshments.  Registration is limited.  Sing up early at the Armstrong Center located at 1265 South Palmetto Avenue.  Registration is also being taken at De Anza Community Center located at 1405 South Fern Avenue, or register online @ www.ci.ontario.ca.us
