David Cosby on fathering the Etheridge/Cypher kids

david%20crosby.jpgSinger David Crosby, already a father of three, agreed to be sperm donor so his good friend Melissa Etheridge and her then-partner Julie Cypher could start a family. In his new memior, "Since Then," the member of legendary bands Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young writes about his decision to father not one, but two children for Etheridge and Cypher.

"To me it's a no-brainer. If two couples care about each other and one couple wants to help the other couple have kids, why wouldn't they do it? We were following our hearts, and our hearts told us that these were people...We believe in love."

Cypher carried both children and in an excerpt of the book in the new issue of "People," she tells of how Crosby once delivered the sperm: "We were having our house painted and this big, black Suburban pulls up while all the painters are eating their lunch. It's David, dropping off a paper bag with the sample in it. He's wearing dark glasses and looks like a drug dealer, comes in the door with the bag, gets back in the big black car and leaves."

The second time, Crosby met Cypher at a street corner, handed her the paper sack, and asked for a life to rehearsal and could she stop and pick Graham Nash up to?
"So I put the paper sack with this little thing of sperm in it between my legs to keep it warm and we go pick up Graham...I'm driving really carefully because the car is full of history if I get in an accident AND I've got this secret paper sack tucked between my legs."

"It's discouraging how this worked out because one of the main reasons [wife] Jan and I did it was the love between Julie and Melissa, who have obviouly transferred that affection to new partners. But both women have brought the kids up here and been with me at different times...They're great kids: superbriught, extremely nice, beautiful, happy, wonderful children...They're very special people in my life."
