Some "Sunshine" to warm DVD shelves

Another DVD title to place on my Christmas wish list is "Little Miss Sunshine" which I've just learned has been schedcuked for release on December 19th! I've got the perfect double feature planned with "Sunshine" and "The Devil Wears Prada," my two favorite movies from last summer and both terrific word of mouth hits.
"Sunshine" has a stellar cast that includes funnyman Steve Carell in a very serious role: a suicidal gay man reeling after being left by his boyfriend who takes up with a professional rival. There's a part of me that wants gay characters to be happy and positive but hey, heartbreak is the same for everyone - gay or straight - and sometimes people get really desperate about it.
But "Sunshine," which also stars Greg Kinnear, Toni Collette and the adorable Abigail Breslin, is actually quite funny and sweet as this dysfunctional family hops into their broken-down van and drives across several states to get their daughter to a beauty pageant. And in the end, Carell's character seems to have embraced life again. I guarantee you will be smiling though much of this film.
Anyway, the DVD released by Fox Home entertainment will include four alternate endings as well as some optional audio commentary. Should be a hoot.

Greg Hernandez has covered the entertainment industry for the Daily
News since 2001. He's considered a bit odd by some for his obsession
with box office numbers, has been known to camp out near the kitchen
at premieres for first crack at the hors d'oeurves, and Greg's never
seen a red carpet he didn't want to stroll down.
