As ABC mulls his future, Isaiah Washington story still talk of town....
Today marks a full week since "Grey's Anatomy" star Isaiah Washington reignited a firestorm at the Golden Globe awards by inexplicibly grabbing a microphone backstage to announce to the press that "I never called T.R. (Knight0 a faggot." Knight went on Ellen DeGeneres' show two days later to say that, yeah, he did. Finally Thursday, ABC publicly scolded the actor and within hours, he had issued a lengthy apology and is scheduled to meet with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).
On Friday, Washington hired a pair of publicists known for handling stars involved in crisis situations. But the actor's future remains up in the air as calls for his firing grow louder still.
The New York Times today published its first in-depth story on the controversy in today's paper with not much new information from my story in last Friday's LA Daily News. The NY Times, however, does quote an unnamed ABC executive who said that Washington's behavior "could be grounds for dismissal under [ABC parent company] Disney's corporate anti-discrimination policy." The Los Angeles Times also published its first significant piece on the situation deep in Saturday's Calendar section.

Meanwhile, "Grey's Anatomy" took home the best TV drama prize Saturday night at the Producers Guild of America Awards in Los Angeles. According to a report in today's edition of USA Today, show creator Shonda Rhimes, who has never been publicly critical of Washington's behavior, kept a low profile by skipping the red carpet and not posing for pictures backstage with her award. She told USA Today reporter William Keck: "I'm just here supporting my fellow producers on the show."
Patrick Dempsey, who scuffled with Washington on the set back in October over the incident, was on hand as a presenter at the PGAs but steered clear of the press.

Greg Hernandez has covered the entertainment industry for the Daily
News since 2001. He's considered a bit odd by some for his obsession
with box office numbers, has been known to camp out near the kitchen
at premieres for first crack at the hors d'oeurves, and Greg's never
seen a red carpet he didn't want to stroll down.
