Gay marriage hot topic on "Brothers & Sisters"

roblowe_drvegas_240.jpgOh well, it looks like it's not gonna be Rob Lowe's Sen. Robert McCallister hooking up with Kevin (Matthew Rhys) on "Brothers & Sisters" as I had speculated and hoped for. Drat! I mean, a closeted Repujblican politician wouldn't be so far-fetched, right? But McCallister's character's brother is gay, it was revealed on Sunday night's episode - the first in a month - and I look forward to meeting this brother who the senator described as not only a gay man but "... a cute one too." Since Lowe's real-life brother, Chad Lowe, has snagged a role on "24," we can start speculating about what handsome actor will play the role of his on-screen brother.
brolove.jpgPreviews for next week's episode show the introduction of the super-sexy Jason Lewis who Kevin meets at the gym. He's a closeted actor who Kevin is likely to hook up with for at least four episodes. Sounds good to me!
Anyway, a solid episode of the show this week with some silly but funny stuff when Holly (Patricia Wettig) insists on having an office at the family business so Nora (Sally Field) insists she have one too. It got a little ridiculous though when Nora sent out an email suggesting everyone bring their dogs to work - and they do.

But what I cared the most about was Kevin's episode-long showdown with Kitty (Calista Flockhart) who is going to accept a job as the senator's communications director. Kevin is against it because this Republican senator voted against gay marriage.
"In 20 years, when I'm finally grown uop enough to sustain a commited relationship, I may want to get married," he tells Kitty and later adds: "There's not one thing that suggests he will do what's best for me...You want to work for someone who wants to strip me of my consistutional rights!""
Later, the senator explains to Kitty that gay marriage is "not an issue" for him but he needed to vote for the constitutional amendment banning it so he could get the support he needed for his education bill.
"I wouldn't do it again," he admits when Kitty points out the hypocricy of his vote. "I don't hate gay people."
I'm glad the issue was brought up and talked about and I have no doubt it will surface again as this show continues to tackle sensitive subjects on a regular basis and, i hope, makes a lot of people think.

It's exactly comments like this, that makes me not like the show. Kevin is a exactly the self-absorbed character we've seen on television for years.
Why didn't they just write Will Truman in the show or have Richard Hatch play himself.
