John Edwards says he's "just not there yet" on gay marriage...

John-edwards.jpgCaught John Edwards on ABC's "This Week" Sunday morning. He said in an interview, wife Elizabeth by his side, that is not ready to take a position yet on gay marriage, and acknowledged his upbringing in the rural South makes this a troubling issue for him.
"It's easy for me to say, civil unions yes, partnership benefits, yes," he said. But on gay marriage, he said, "I'm just not there yet."
As a gay man and a Democrat, it leaves me cold that Edwards does not think that gay Americans should be treated equally in this regard. It's a civil rights issue, not about his Southern upbringing. I expected more from him.

Because it is so early in the campaign and because it is such a conservative bell weather, I think he is prudent to take a " like the gays, don't like gay marriage" tact. Just like sodomy (whoopie I am for butt-****ing and those filthy butt-****ers)it has to be phrased in terms that are amenable to the masses (gay rights should not be held hostage to archaic laws against nature). Don't worry, it's just nomenclature at this point. I think we should get all sentimental and nostalgic and start calling them Courthouse Unions.

John Edwards knows a lot about [poverty, after all, he's helped throw a lot of people into it with:

- his co-sponsorship of H-1b visas,

- his vote for MFN-China

but what about stuff like iraq war and the patriot act?

well, he voted for them too

About the only think you can say for Edwards is, he spent so much time runnign for president that he didnt have time to do more damage as senator
