Gay mayor reaches out to Tim Hardaway...

It's not exactly "gayhab," which Isaiah Washington recently checked out of, but North Miami Mayor Kevin Burns has invited disgraced former NBA star Tim Hardaway to spend a day with him, his partner of 23 years and their adopted daughter.

A former player for the Miami Heat, Hardaway has ignited a firestorm for anti-gay remarks he made while discussing former player John Amaechi's new book in which he comes out as a gay man. Hardaway said, among other things, that "I hate gay people."
Mayor Burns says Hardaway has taken him up on his offer.
"We're just trying to show him that there are living, breathing people that just happen to be gay," says Burns, who is still working out details of the visit with Hardaway's representatives and expects they will make a joint announcement on Monday. The plan is for Hardaway to join Burns and his family for a routine weekday at the mayor's office and home - doing things like dropping off Burns' child at school, meeting with constituents and dinner with the family.
Post-outburst, the NBA canceled Hardaway's remaining appearances at this weekend's All-Star festivities in Las Vegas, and he lost at least two major endorsement deals.
"I don't expect (Hardaway) to be waving a peace flag anytime soon, even after this," Burns says. "But maybe he'll be less likely to say something bad about people if he knows them and understands a little more."
