I love the Tony Awards because 1) I love the theater and 2) They are soooooooo gay!!!
The camera pans to the nominees and many of the men have their partners looking at them lovingly - the way Nancy used to look at Ronnie. Take that Republicans!

What a night! A gay man (David Hyde Pierce) wins best actor in a musical, divas and gay icons Patti LuPone, Bernadette Peters and Harvey Fierstein are among the presenters, Cynthia Nixon and her girlfriend get tons of camera time, Neil Patrick Harris presents and Mark Indelicante, the fashion-loving nephew from "Ugly Betty," introduced a number from "Mary Poppins."

In addition, straight but gay-friendly hunks Taye Diggs, Patrick Wilson and Harry Connick Jr. are also presenters as is my favorite aging pop star Donny Osmond. And this is the night that "American Idol" winner Fantasia cemented her status as Broadway's newest star after belting out one helluva number from "The Color Purple" in which she currently stars.
549407.jpgFAVORITE SPEECH: Julie White, best actress in a drama ("The Little Dog Laughed") beat, among others, past winners Angela Lansbury, Vanessa Redgrave and Swoosie Kurtz. "Oh my goodness, you Tony voters, what a buncha wacky kids...I can't feel my hands! Is that a bad thing?" She played the "hideous agent" of a closeted actor who she is discouraging from coming out. "My agents have never been hideous to me," she said, "to my face!"
FAVORITE FUNNY LINE: Presenter Zach Braff, who introduced a number from best musical winner "Spring Awakenings" said: "I'm tired of hiding who i am. My name is Zach Braff and I love musical theater."
FAVORITE INSPIRATIONAL LINE: Best actor in a drama winner Frank Langella ("Frost/Nixon") who said of actors competing for the Tony: "The struggle, the striving for success, that's a race you can't lose."
redcarpet49.jpgPERFECT CHOICE: The evening started off perfectly with four-time Tony winner Angela Lansbury, who is back on Broadway for the first time in ages and a 2007 nominee for "Deuce," opening the show. She recalled how this was the 40th year the awards have had a full televised broadcast and recalled hosting back in 1967 when she and her "Mame" co-star Bea Arthur sang "Bosom Buddies" from the show that won them both Tonys.
NEIL PATRICK HARRIS and Christina Applegate were the evening's first presenters. NPH is charming and funny and, I think, would have made a terrific host! They did not have a host this year and it was fine but surely someone could have filled Hugh Jackman's shoes! Billy Crudup wins the first award for featured actor in a play ("The Coast of Utopia") and all I can think of is "How could he have left Mary Louise Parker for Claire Danes when she was seven months pregnant with their son?" I mean, it's none of my business and it is time to move on and yet still, I judge.
gallagher_l.jpgThen this adorable kid named John Gallagher Jr.(right), just 22 years old, wins for featured actor in a musical for "Spring Awakenings" and i didn't recognize him with his normal hair. In the show, he's got a real wacky do which you saw later in the telecast and that I saw when he performed on "Regis & Kelly" a few days ago.

Among the other things I enjoyed on the telecast was Audra MacDonald's performance from "110 in the Sun." She was so good that it's no wonder she has already won four Tonys. She didn't win a fifth tonight because she was beaten in the best actress in a musical category by Christine Ebersole who won for "Grey Gardens."
07tonys-live-ebersole.jpgIt was the mega-talented Eberlose's second Tony win and she also performed magnificantly on the show. She said in her speech: "I left Hollywood when they told me I was over the hill. Now I'm standing here with this most distinguished award for what I consider to be the role of a lifetime..I'm over the hill in the role of a lifetime, This is so encouraging."
Hollywood's loss is Broadway's gain.
