I was excited to read that Mary Wilson is performing a new cabaret act and is booked into Feinstein's at Loews Regency in NYC through June 30. Her show, "Up Close," includes ballads in styles from jazz to blues to Brazillian as well as Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now."
"The mass public knows me from my 'oohs' and 'aahs' with the Supremes but has no idea what I sound like on my own," Wilson tells The Celebrities Column. "This new album [scheduled for release in late summer] will probably put me on the map in terms of showing my sound. It's not hip-hop. I'm not trying to compete with Mary J. Blige or Mariah Carey. I like them, it's just that I'm 63."
Mary is going to be performing in LA this summer and I hope to see her perform and have a chat. I've always been curious about her. She was a member of the Supremes the longest from pre-stardom days in the early 60s through the glory years with Diana and Flo [and then Cindy] to several post-Ross incarnations in the 70s before the group disbanded in 1977.
