At the Movies w/Greg...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaalicense1.jpg
I've seen five movies in the past six days so wanted to briefly give you my impressions of them. First off, I didn't post a picture of LICENSE TO WED (thanks for thje correction Mad Mick!) because I liked it. I just think John Krasinski is adorable and the movie's biggest asset. But gawd, I hated the movie and, it seemed, so did most of the other people who were at a sold-out screening at The Grove yesterday. Easily the worst movie Robin Williams has ever starred in...and he's made some dogs. Mandy Moore - so lovely - and Krasinski play a couple who want to get married but must pass this pre-marriage test before Williams, a minister, will marry them in his church. His character is dreadful and annoying and you will want to slap the screen. The ONLY thing I liked about him was his choice of songs while singing in the shower (a Supremes medley).

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaajolie.jpgA MIGHTY HEART: So good. It reminded me a little of "United 93" in that you know the real-life story's tragic end but somehow, you allow yourself to be filled with hope that somehow it will turn out differently. The movie absolutely rests on the shoulders of Angelina Jolie and she is so absolutely excellent that I will be outraged if she does not get nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Marianne Pearl. Jolie breaks your heart in this movie - just breaks it.

SICKO: A Michael Moore documentary is never gonna be as balanced as something on say, PBS. But his films are still entertaining and enlightening. Seeing all the stories of people in our country who have been screwed with or without insurance just makes your blood boil because it is so sadly clear that in the U.S., we don't take care of our own. Then Moore goes off to other countries like Canada, the U.K. and France and it looks so great over there with socialized medicine. I'm sure it's not that rosy and that's where Moore can loose you. But the best part is when he takes some World Trade Center rescue workers to Guantanamo Bay to seek the same level of health care that terror suspects get - which is said to be excellent. It's an provocative and entertaining film.

TRANSFORMERS: Hey, this ain't my thing at all but I was surprised by how entertaining it was. There's this great kid in it, Shia Lebeouf, who just makes the movie sing - he's funny and cool and just a terrific presence. His love interest is about the prettiest young girl I've seen in movies in a long time: Megan Fox. Hunk factor: Josh Duhamel and Tyrese "No men allowed at my show" Gibson play military types, Angelina's dad, Jon Voight, plays a senator and standing next to him in most of his scene is the very handsome Steven Ford, son of the late President Gerald Ford, who plays a Four Star General...but he doesn't have any lines!
Anyway, if you are a fans of the robots and all that, you will be in heaven.

And finally, I reviewed HAIRSPRAY in an earlier post.

Small oversight: Robin Williams' latest dog is "License to Wed," not "License to Drive." And I can tell from your mistake just you were by all that barking.
