Why Ryan Seacrest got picked to host the Emmys...

I'm still a bit uninspired by the choice of Ryan Seacrest to host the Emmys. Just such a blah choice. Was flipping through my Daily Variety and Seacrest explained his philosophy on hosting the Sept. 16 kudofest: "I don't feel I need to do a song and dance and 15 minutes of jokes. The way I'm looking at the whole show, it's about elevating on their night, as opposed to making it my night...I'm not going to pretend to be something I'm not. I plan to honor and class of the Emmy."
Greg's two cents: That sounds BORING. But wise since Seacrest can't sing, can't dance, and can't tell jokes. He's basically a robo-host and will actually be doing double duty that night hosting E! channel's red carpet pre-show. Is there NO ONE else in Holllywood who can host these things?
Says Emmy show executive producer Ken Ehrlich: "There's a real likeability factor with Ryan, as well as an ability to deal with a live, hopefully unpredictable series of events. I will feel very confident knowing up there in a live situation."
OK, so you will be confident. But will you be entertained?
Greg Hernandez has covered the entertainment industry for the Daily
News since 2001. He's considered a bit odd by some for his obsession
with box office numbers, has been known to camp out near the kitchen
at premieres for first crack at the hors d'oeurves, and Greg's never
seen a red carpet he didn't want to stroll down.

With all the tension and politics in the auditorium the EMMY's need a comic to cut through the over-the-top seriousness that many people bring to the event. I think Ryan Seacrest is a colossal mistake.
FOX always seem to turn away from the fact that after, what?, 60 some years of the event, there's a reason comics have been most successful in the room and on TV. FOX too often seem to "innovate" by screwing with what's working rather than coming up with something truly new and interesting. In the end it's still a bunch of people coming together to see who gets a trophy - there's not a lot to be done with that...
