An astroid is named after George Takei...
Well, this is kinda cool. Out actor George Takei of "Star Trek" and "Heroes" fame, has had a piece outer space named for him. An asteroid between Mars and Jupiter has been renamed 7307 Takei in honor of the actor, best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu in the original ''Star Trek'' series and movies.
''I am now a heavenly body,'' Takei tells the Associated Press. ''I found out about it yesterday. ... I was blown away. It came out of the clear, blue sky -- just like an asteroid.''
This isn't just some fly-by-night honor. The renaming of 7307 Takei had to be approved by the International Astronomical Union's Committee on Small Body Nomenclature. About 14,000 asteroid names have been approved by the panel, while about 165,000 asteroids have been identified and numbered.
I think there should be an Out In Hollywood astroid!!
Greg Hernandez has covered the entertainment industry for the Daily
News since 2001. He's considered a bit odd by some for his obsession
with box office numbers, has been known to camp out near the kitchen
at premieres for first crack at the hors d'oeurves, and Greg's never
seen a red carpet he didn't want to stroll down.
