Catching up w/Sam Harris at Les Girls benefit...

Was in Hollywood last night to cover celeb arrivals at Avalon for the Les Girls breast cancer fundraiser when I saw Sam Harris heading to the door.
"Aren't you going to do any interviews Sam?"
He laughed and said, "Sure!"
I don't think he was trying to skip the red carpet, I think he just walked in the wrong way.
aasamharrisxx.jpgIt was great to see him again after we sat next to each other at a movie screening several months back and did a few Perry Pearl lines from the cancelled sitcom "The Class" in which Sam stole every scene he was in.
Sam: What movie did we see?
Greg: I don't remember!
We both laugh. I had given him a business card wit the bloig address on it and he had gone on to read my posts about him and his alter-ego Perry. Sam performed last night at the benefit - three songs.
Greg: I won't get to see you. They're not letting the riff-raff in.
Sam: Don't ever refer toi yourself as riff-raff. SHAME! Shame on you!
Greg: What are you up to now that you aren't doing "The Class" now. I'm still not over [the cancellation]?
Sam: You know, I'm not over it but I am over it because it was such a great experience and it's led to so many wonderful things and there were so many great relationships that I got to have during that show. It's brought me to a different level. For the longest time, I was the Broadway guy, the 'Star Search' guy or the record guy and to be able to do a television comedy and to be received that way, which I loved so much. My acting style without singing is just as important to me. So I'm very, very grateful for "The Class."
Greg: Are you doing any pilots?
Sam: I actually have three different television projects that I'm workign on right now. They're really in great shape so we'll see what happens. Life is good, I can't complain.
Greg: Do you have a new CD coming out?
Sam: Yes as a matter of fact. It's called "Free" and we're really just about five songs into it so [release is] not until next year. It's a pop CD, kind of political sometimes and all the different meanings of what free can be - whatever you think that is. It's so great to be at a time and at an age where I don't really give a s***. I want to say what I want and I'm just really loving my life and just kind of laying it out."
Greg: It shows on you. You look so young, the same as when you were on 'Star Trek'...I mean 'Star Search."
Sam: I might as well as been on 'Star Trek.' Well, God bless you, thank you. It was a long time ago.

For those too young to remember "Star Search," it was the "American Idol" of the day and Sam was the first winner of the male vocalist title, goijng undefeated all season long in 1983. He has gone on to release several CDs but really made his mark on Broadway in his Tony-nominated role in "The Life" as well major roles as in productions of "Grease," "Cabaret," "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," "The Jazz Singer," and "The Producers."

Anything that Sam Harris is in, I wanna see.
