Celebrating classic TV show theme songs...

This was posted on Hollywood Joe earlier today but I wanted to share it here in its entirety:

.brady.jpgI'm a 70s kid so as you can imagine, sitting with hundreds of people singing the theme to "The Brady Bunch" led by Marcia Brady herself (Maureen McCormick), it was almost enough make a grown man cry - almost.
McCormick also asked the audience to stretch with her by looking up at the ceiling and smile, then turning to the left and smile and turn to the right and smile: "Now you know how we felt shooting the main titles for 'The Brady Bunch!'"
Didn't you always want to be in one of those squares or live in the Brady house? I sure did. Didn't even matter that I'd have to share a room with Greg, Peter and Bobby. Wait a minute, I'm getting off track here.
McCormick, who I chatted with before the show and will share that conversation with you in a future post, was joined by such TV icons from the 60s, 70s and 80s as Lindsay Wagner ("Bionic Woman"), John Schneider ("Dukes of Hazzard"), and William Daniels and Bonnie Bartlett ("St. Elsewhere") Thursday night for the Televison Academy's "Another Opening, Another Show: A Celebration of TV Theme Music" event which showcased TV theme songs from the 50s to the present.
.addams.jpgI learned so many things: Did you know that "Welcome Back Kotter" was originally called just plain "Kotter"? Gabe Kaplan's 70s sitcom was renamed after John Sebastian brought his song "Welcome Back" to producers to use as a theme? Both the show, and the song, were big hits. Did you know that each character on "The Addams Family" had their OWN theme music or that "The Beverly Hillbillies" and "The Real McCoys" were the first shows to use theme songs to set up the story?
Schneider teamed with "Yes, Dear" star Jean Louisa Kelly for a medly of songs including his version of the "I Love Lucy" theme, first heard with lyrics when Lucy tells Ricky she's having a aby. Kelly, meanwhile, managed to turn the "Mickey Mouse Club" theme into a saucy torch song which led Schneider to crack that "Walt Disney is no longer frozen."
McCormick paid tribute to the song's lyricist, Sherwood Schwartz, who was also the show's creator and producer. Schwartz also wrote the lyrics to the theme of his show "Gilligan's Island" which the audience sang to when the entire opening credits were shown.
.greenacres.jpgOne of the highlights was a discussion with composer Vic Mizzy who wrote the finger-snapping theme to "The Addams Family" and the classic "Green Acres" opening featuring the show's stars Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor.
Of the"Addams" theme Mizzy said: "Two finger snaps and you live in Bel Air...the best thing that happened was I got publishing rights." Of "Green Acres," he said of Gabor: "After hearing her sing, I said, 'Talk it. Make believe you're a snob on Park Avenue. She only sang the last note and, thankfully, we got it on the first take."
I knew every word to that and plenty of other themes. This isn't the kind of evening that you would initially think would be kind of a blast, but for a kid who watched "The Brady Bunch" on Friday nights after having McDonald's for dinner (family Friday night tradition), it really was...a blast!
