Emmy winner Sally Field once again elevates "Brothers & Sisters"

If you watched last night's episode of "Brothers & Sisters," I think it's clear why Sally Field gave the speech she did at the Emmys last month, dedicating the award to the moms waiting for their sons to come home from war. As Nora, welcoming her injured son Justin home from Iraq, Field was so real in her worry and fussing that I felt like I was watching my mom! And in the final scene, when she holds Justin as he deals with agonizing pain, it drove home the point that it is the mothers so often who are caring for their young sons when they come back injured.
But, as it so often brilliantly does, the show balanced out the heavier moments with lightness and fun - especially the road trip that Nora, Kitty (Calista Flockhart) and Kevin (Matthew Rhys) take to San Diego to pick Justin up from the hospital. Kitty is listening to an obnoxious conservative radio dude (think Rush Limbaugh) and saying he's not so bad when the host starts railing on Kitty, Nora AND Kevin as well as Kevin's boyfriend - the senator's gay brother - saying that they will be up to God knows what in the Lincoln bedroom. Kitty calls in and ends up hinting that Abraham Lincoln could've been gay etc. and her fiancee (Rob Lowe) has to do damage control. Funny stuff.
I do wonder where the presidential storyline will go though. If he's elected, it would add this sense of unreality to the show, kinda like when Roseanne won the lottery. Even being a senator kind of isolates Lowe's character from the family some so it will be interesting to see where that goes...
Anyway, the show is as good as it ever was, if not better.
