"Ugly Betty" star Michael Urie talks about fame...

.aaaurie.jpgAfterElton.com editor Michael Jensen has posted a terrific and wide-ranging interview he had recently with "Ugly Betty" star Michael Uire whose character of Marc on the show is openly gay. Urie himself does not discuss his personal life and doesn't do in this piece. But he talks about Justin, Wilhelmina, concerns of being typecast, Patti LuPone as his mother, and his new boyfriend on the show.
Here is an excerpt of when Jensen asks him about the fame the show has brought to his life:
"I completely get it and I fall victim to it sometimes, too. Vanessa [Williams] calls it ‘a friend in your head.’ It happens all the time, especially to those actors on TV. If you see a big movie star, they’re intimidating. Or if you see a recording artist, they’re intimidating. You see a sports star, they’re intimidating. But someone on TV is in your house all the time. They’re literally in your living room and you see them week after week. You see them change and grow and you feel like you know them. They’re your friend in your head, or your friend in their head. So when they meet you or when they see you, they think they know you."

"I was in Yosemite with my family last weekend and we were just walking down a trail and we heard, “Ahh! I love you! I love you!” And this woman ran over and hugged me. It’s pretty awkward sometimes. It’s like oh, my god, I don’t know you, but they come up to you with this look. For the first several months when that would happen, I just assumed I did know them, because they seemed to know me so well. I’ve gotten a little more accustomed to it.
So I think the extension of that is they want to know about your personal life because they feel like they do know you. And I guess that’s totally fair that they would just want to know who you are on the inside. I find it’s just too complicated to get into all that. It’s about the work and about the project. I think that there’s enough in the work and what the projects do for people’s personal lives that our personal lives are far less interesting."
