Portia de Rossi on playing women in love...

I just read a pretty terrific interview in the new issue of TV Guide on the new lesbian couple on "Nip/Tuck." You may have heard of them: Portia de Rossi, formerly of "Ally McBeal" and "Arrested Development" and off-screen love of Ellen DeGeneres; and Joely Richardson, daughter of Vanessa Redgrave and series regular for five seasons as Julia McNamara.
Hey! Wasn't Julia married to Dylan Walsh's character, Sean, and isn't Julian McMahon's character, Christian, the biological father of her son?
When they find out she has fallen in love with de Rossi's character of Olivia Lord, they don't take it well hurling anti-lesbian insults at her. DeRossi said reading the script "makes me remember all the people I had to come out to and how often I had to come out. People think you just hold a press conference. But you don't - you tell individuals. And you cross your fingers with every single person you care about, hoping that they'll love you just the same."
Portia notes that this is the first time she is a lesbian playing a lesbian: "I talked to Ellen about it and I realized that I spent so many years downplaying that side of me, just to forward my career. I could pass as a heterosexual and it would have been easy for me to stay that way, except that I didn't feel honest as an actor because I wasn't honest in my personal life."
