Ringing in the New Year...
Well, I don't have footage of my New Year's Eve...Thank God! But there is footage of Anderson Cooper's as he rung in 2008 with the help of Kathy Griffin! Both are favorites of mine so if I were in front of a television when the clock struck midnight, I'd a been watching them.
Some friends and I had plans to be at The Abbey in West Hollywood but got delayed as we watched some of Kathy's new special "Straight to Hell" on Bravo. Then Doug Spearman, the talented actor of "Noah's Arc" fame, invited us go to his neighbor's house party where there was some of the prettiest Christmas decorations on display, stiff drinks and a platter of home-made fried chicken that was to die for.
Finally, at around 10 p.m., we took off for WeHo with me as the self-appointed designated driver. My first dry New Year's Eve in I don't remember how long. We get to The Abbey and the line is longer than it was when Hillary Clinton appeared there. We wait. And wait.
I tell Scott and E. (my friend who doesn't like me to use his name in my blog) that we can celebrate in line or we can go over to Fiesta Cantina down the street, have drinks (Diet Coke for me) then return to The Abbey after the midnight hour. We do that, it's fun, then around 12:15, head back to The Abbey. Still a line. But, it's at least moving - slowly. Scott and I, much to the absolute horror of E., decide to pass the time by singing a medley of Carpenters songs. When we run out of those, we do Captain and Tennille. I could barely get through "Muskrat Love" without cracking up. Scott had a few so singing sappy 70s songs is understandable. Me? Stone-cold sober. As E. noted dryly: "There really isn't much difference in you - drunk or sober."
It was a blast.
We finally get into The Abbey close to 1 a.m. and make the most of the hour that we have inside with a very festive crowd in high spirits. A good way to ring in 2008...
