Academy Awards: Greg's red carpet snapshots...
I gotta say, this was the most fun that I've ever had at the Academy Awards. It was just one of those years that was filled with good vibes. good interviews and a lot of excitement. It's days like this that make me so grateful for what I do and to be able to have the opportunities to have a front row seat to some of these big Hollywood events. I am so not over it! I wanted to share with you some of the snapshots I took while on the red carpet. Some aren't the best because I was juggling a tape recorder, cell phone and camera kinda all at once.

Patrick Dempsey really is McDreamy ain't he? I had never interviewed him before so it was fun to gab for a few seconds. Patrick was launched as a movie star in the early 80s with "Loverboy" and "Can't Hurry Love" then re-emerged with "Grey's Anatomy." Now he's back in movies again with the hit "Enchanted," the drama "Freedom Writers" opposite Hilary Swank and the upcoming romantic comedy "Made of Honor."
Patrick said to me: "I certainly think the success of 'Grey's Anatomy' has certainly opened doors to me that wouldn't have happened and I'm grateful for that. I hopefully will make choices in the future that will allow me to continue to do these things. It's really up to the fans, quite honestly, and if they're gonna go see movies that I make." I tell Dempsey that after all the Meredith-McDreamy drama, it was nice to see him sweep Amy Adams off her feet in "Enchanted." "I was nice to finally get the girl in the end."
Best actor winner Daniel Day-Lewis (with wife Rebecca Miller) was kind enough to stop and let me take his picture but some "real" photog kinda ruined my shot!
One of my favorite stars, John Travolta (with wife Kelly Preston) is always fun to talk to on the red carpet. But he could only wave this time as he rushed in and prepared to present the best original song Oscar. He danced his way to the stage at the end of the final musical number and I thought that was pretty cool.
The Academy Awards, in my opinion, have seriously lacked old-time movie stars that connect us to the history. There are still plenty of the big stars of yesteryear around and I'm glad that Jane Russell graced the red carpet, still looking lovely in her 80s. I wonder why the Academy doesn't award an honorary Oscar to someone like Doris Day or Lauren Bacall? It would give the proceedings such a touch of class and remind us of whart it was all about before all this "Who are you wearing?" crap!
My Daily News buddy Sandra Barrera and I at yet another awards show. This year, we didn't get to hang out backstage but had some fun mugging on the red carpet.
Greg Hernandez has covered the entertainment industry for the Daily
News since 2001. He's considered a bit odd by some for his obsession
with box office numbers, has been known to camp out near the kitchen
at premieres for first crack at the hors d'oeurves, and Greg's never
seen a red carpet he didn't want to stroll down.

I'm with you Greg - the Oscar's are missing out on the classic movie stars still with us. Jane Russell looked fabulous !
It's high time that Doris Day was given an honorary Oscar - she was number one in the box office and in the hearts of her fans.
Thanks for pointing this out.
