American Idol: Eliminated Danny Noriega on "being really, really different"
After listening in on a conference call a little while ago with voted-off "American Idol" contestant Danny Noriega, it became clear to me that this kid is young - so young that he doesn't often speak in complete sentences which makes your notes look pretty unusual. But, I will share what I learned.
First off, Danny does not at any time say whether or not he is gay. Everyone assumes he is it seems because of his flamboyant appearance and manner and he was asked out it. He just kept referring to himself as "different." He also said he was often advised "to tone it down" but did not say by who.
"You always want to stay true to yourself," he said. "I definitely was like, really really "different."
So, what about his sexuality? He said: "Your personal life and your job are two different things and I think people should respect that. ...I think it has nothing to do with your job."
Uh boy. Get this boy a manager, quick!
Anyway, Danny is "different" in the way that Justin on "Ugly Betty" is it seems. We don't give it a name. His being "different" did result in a lot of younger kids reaching out to him, Danny told us during the interview:
"I love the little fans letters that I'm getting from little kids. They are admriing me for being myself...They've never seen that befiore. I'd like to inspire those kikds who feel that they can't do anything."
The sassy attitude toward Simon: "I try to just be myself and not overthink things. Last year (when he unsuccessfully auditioned) I was just totally not being myself...I was trying to create an image. This year I'd just be myself and see if it would work...You can't please everybody. It's important to be yourself....I can't change myself for anybody. It's so important to be yourself in this compeition."."
On the controversial YouTube video that included various goth rants: "That is something that is like so forever ago...almost like another person ago. I'm actually kinda shocked that they used that one. There are more itneresting ones. It's more of an acting kind of show I used to put on."
"We're all trying to be something in life right now and we don't understand why people would be trying to tear it down like that. it was pretty sad," he added. "We all try and stay away from the Internet but it's hard to avoid when you turn the TV on in the morrning"
On his version of "Tainted Love" which got him voted off: "It was so much fun. I was really happy with the performance, I don't care what anybody says...I was excited about it and had a blast doing it."
On being voted off: "I was semi-surprised...I definitely kind of had a little bit of confidence...You get all the fan mail and you think you're doing something right for a second. But, it is what it is."

Straight boys don't know "Tainted Love" -- much less want to sing it.
