UPDATE: John Amaechi did NOT lend his name to "Save the Boom"

I admire the determination of Fred Karger in his efforts to save Laguna Beach's legendary gay bar the Boom Boom Room. I can't help to wonder if it should be saved at this point since it is indifference from the public and a decision by the former owners to sell to a man who had no plans to preserve it that led to it being shut down last September.
But hey, it's fun I guess to keep fighting the good fight.
SAVE the BOOM (www.savetheboom.com) announced today announced that it mailed off its 500th yellow post card to Coast Inn and Boom Boom Room property owner Steven Udvar-Hazy and that two of them were signed by former NBA players Dennis Rodman and John Amaechi. This is news to Amaechi's PR folks who say the athlete-turned-author is NOT lending his name to the effort.
So, no Amaechi. That leaves Rodman who is not exactly a ringing endorsement given his drunken antics over many years that have eclipsed his once-great career with the Chicago Bulls and other teams. The group reminds us that that Florence Henderson and Fran Drescher earlier had signed and mailed in post cards to help save the landmark gay bar.
But I ask you, is this dude Udvar-Hazy really gonna be swayed by Mrs. Brady and The Nanny? Or ANYONE really?
Said Karger: “We will fight for our 61 year old landmark and hope that Mr. Udvar-Hazy do the right thing and reopen these businesses. The postcards are addressed to the Airplane Tycoon at in Los Angeles office and ask him to help us by either reducing his asking price or consider donating the building that he owns to the City of Laguna Beach or to a newly created trust...He could donate the property and we could keep it as a gay bar, hotel and restaurant and even include a gay and lesbian community center in the historic building. We have an operator all lined up if Mr. Udvar-Hazy is willing to do this. And If the building were remodeled it could become the finest gay resort destination in the world and become a huge money maker for its owner."
Good luck, Fred.
