Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Thursday that he hopes gay marriage will become an economic boon in California wanting gay couples to flock to the state for wedded bliss.

Responding to a question from a man who said he made an appointment in June to get married to his partner of 22 years, Arnold got laughs and applause at an appearance in San Francisco when he said; "You know, I'm wishing everyone good luck with their marriages and I hope that California's economy is booming because everyone is going to come here and get married."

The Sacramento Bee reports that the governor reiterated that he opposes an initiative backed by conservatives to ban gay marriage in the state constitution. He said he personally defines marriage as between a man and a woman but that he does not "want to force that opinion on anyone."
